Obituary of Shirley Edith Turner

TURNER, Shirley Edith passed away peacefully in her 98th year at the Grand River Hospital on March 16, 2021. Shirley will remain in the hearts of her beloved children Carol Ann, Gord (Joanne), Floyd, Scott (Suzanne) and Marnie (Ron). She will be remembered by her grandchildren Kyle, Larry, Liana, Michael, Dakota, Lucas, Corey and Ellie, and four great grandchildren. She will be dearly missed by her sister Jean. Shirley was predeceased by her husband Harold Turner (1995), her son Larry Edward Turner (1952) her parents Edith and Herman Tufts, her sisters Della, Cora, Laura and her brother Floyd.

Shirley was born in Port Colborne, Ontario on November 4, 1923 and was raised on her family's farm. She was married in 1947 to her love, Harold Turner, and they spent their entire married life together in Niagara Falls, Ontario. Shortly after her husband's death Shirley moved to New Hamburg. Shirley graduated from the Greater Niagara General Hospital School of Nursing in 1945. She was a true giver and a hard worker and those attributes shined through in her career as a nurse. Her love for her family was limitless and spending time with family was what she looked forward to the most. Shirley was a skilled knitter and sewist and often gave back to the community by knitting many pairs of mittens for the mitten tree at her church. She loved creating for her family and extended family.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Essentials Cremation and Burial Services (905-354-2133). As per her wishes cremation has taken place. The family has decided to have a Memorial Service during the summer months; further details to follow. The family would like to extend a thank you to the staff at Nithview Retirement Home and Village in New Hamburg, where Shirley lived for over 10 years, and to the nursing staff and doctors at the Grand River Hospital in Kitchener for the extensive care that they provided to Shirley. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to The War Amps, one of Shirley's favourite charities. Online condolences and donations may be made on Shirley’s tribute page found at EssentialsNiagara.com.

I was saddened to read about dear Shirley ‘s passing. I was happy however that she had a long and happy life.
I have many, many fond memories of Shirley and the Turner family. I grew up across the street from the family on Dorchester Rd in Niagara Falls. Shirley became my mentor and second mother to me. She was the reason that I became a Registered Nurse. I spent alot of time at the Turner household, as a child playing and watching Shirley iron….i was amazed at how much ironing dear Shirley did ! Later, as a teenager, I babysat Carol, Gord , Floyd and Scott. Marnie came later.
I will never forget dearest Shirley and wonderful memories I have her.
I extend my condolences to the entire family.. Shirley was a great lady and I loved her.
