Obituary of Martha Rose Lamothe

Martha Rose Lamothe (née Sloan), of Fort Erie, Ont., passed away on Wednesday, January 16, 2019 at the age of 68.

Martha was born to parents Alex and Margaret Sloan on Nov 14, 1950 in Long Branch, Ontario. She grew up as the eldest of 3 and attended Humber College, graduating with her certificate in Early Childhood Education. Upon completion, she worked at the Crippled Children’s Hospital and as a kindergarten teacher. She spent most of her working life with children in one way or another. She raised three children of her own with her husband, Dan, while running a daycare out of her home, and often taking in foster children at the same time. She received an award from FACS Niagara for her work with troubled children.

In 2000, she opened a small café on Jarvis Street in Fort Erie. While only open for a few short years, it was a cozy sandwich place that Martha worked hard to make homey. She was very proud that many customers loved to eat there because of the warmth they felt in her little shop. She made many friends there that she loved dearly.

She was also a long-time member of the board of Ganawageh Urban Homes in Fort Erie, and made treasured friendships there.

Martha loved beauty. She worked hard on her home, especially during the holidays. She liked to play down her decorating to see the look on her surprised children’s faces at all she had done. She was a talented painter of ceramics – many people still put out her pieces in their homes. She loved to garden, both indoors and out. She was a great cook and baker, and a wonderful grandmother. There was never a time that there wasn’t an animal in the house, usually multiple - and varied in species! She loved music of all kinds and was an amazing dancer. She made her children laugh on many occasions with her singing, often grabbed the unsuspecting person nearest her for a dance when a favourite song came on, and was happiest in the arms of a great dance partner or listening to a toe tapping band. Martha was very spiritual and tried to live her life the best she could following in what she believed.

Martha is survived by her ex-husband and life-long friend, Daniel Lamothe; her daughter, Monique Bentley (Bill); her sons, Patrick and Jason Lamothe (Melissa); her sister, Sandra Dalgleish and brother, David Sloan; three grandchildren, Chloe, Clark (Jason) and Jaxon (Patrick). She also leaves behind many incredibly special friends that she was blessed to know and love. She is preceded in death by her parents, Alex and Marg.

Martha has chosen cremation and there will be a small gathering of close family and friends to release her ashes at a later date.

The family is grateful for condolences, and asks that any donations be made to the SPCA of your choice.

When you see the colour purple, or a pretty butterfly, know that she is close by and smile.

Until We Meet Again

Each morning when we awake
we know that you are gone.
And no one knows the heartache
As we try to carry on.

Our hearts still ache with sadness
and many tears still flow.
What it meant to lose you, No one will ever know.

Our thoughts are always with you,
your place no one can fill.
In life we loved you dearly,
In death we love you still.

There will always be a heartache,
and often a silent tear,
But always a precious memory
Of the days when you were here.

If tears could make a staircase,
And heartaches make a lane,
We’d walk the path to heaven
And bring you home again.

We hold you close within our hearts,
And there you will remain,
To walk with us throughout our lives
Until we meet again.

Our family chain is broken now,
And nothing will be the same,
But as God calls us one by one,
The chain will link again.

My thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time.

I loved you like a sister. I know that you are in a better place, but that doesn’t mean it’s easy for those of us left behind.

Yes, when I see butterflies you will be thought of . . . as a good caring wife, as a wonderful mother & grandmother to your kids, and as a friend to many.

Miss you already!

Murielle
