Obituary of John Wilson Bartlett

John Wilson Bartlett passed away peacefully at Douglas Memorial Hospital in Fort Erie on Thursday, March 21, 2024, at the age of 88. He has been reunited with his loyal feline companion, Jack. He leaves behind his chosen family members Jessica Hawkes, her parents Kevin and Linda Hawkes, and Phillip Davies as well as his sister, Lynn Holland (Barry); nieces Susan Nash, Julie Aylward and nephews Paul Stevens, Phillip Holland and Neil Holland. Predeceased by wife Sheila, parents Sidney Bartlett & Elizabeth (Harold Haliday) and sister Joyce Stevens (Mike).
Born in Darlington, England, John lived a life marked by adventure, dedication, and kindness. He began his career in the Merchant Navy as a Chief Electrical Engineer, traversing the globe while maintaining the ships at sea. After returning home John worked for Whessoe Engineering and aboard Oil tankers certifying their systems. Upon his first arrival in Canada, John took on the role of managing the boiler system at the University of Waterloo, showcasing his expertise and commitment to his work. He returned to England, where he worked for the Cleveland County Council until he retired and moved back to Canada. Despite his retirement, John remained active, always engaging in new projects and pursuits. At the age of 72, he embraced Ballroom dancing where he made many new friends and later practiced yoga, exemplifying his determination to stay youthful and vibrant.
John was known for his sweet disposition, gentleness, and impeccable manners. His sharp mind remained a hallmark of his character until the very end. He found joy in capturing the beauty of nature and animals through his photography and cherished the ongoing chess games he shared with Kevin, making one move each day via text. In his passing, John leaves behind a legacy of warmth, generosity, and a zest for life that will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A sincere thank you to Dr. Scher, Nurse Jackie and the care team of PSW’s who supported John’s desire to be home as long as possible. Following his final wishes, cremation will take place, followed by a celebration of John's life on a date to be determined. Arrangements have been entrusted to Essentials Cremation and Burial Services in Niagara Falls.

I had the pleasure of working alongside John at Cleveland County for a good number of years. He was a very talented Engineer and taught me a great deal on ‘control systems’. He was a lovely man and good friend. Working with John and Sharon helped create many happy work memories. Pleased that his retirement was spent in Canada. Condolences to his family and good friends.
