Obituary of Hugh Burns

It is with heartfelt sadness that we announce the passing of Hugh Burns on January 21, 2022 at the age of 91. Predeceased by his first wife Mary (1981), he will be dearly missed by his loving and devoted wife of 38 years, Margaret. His children Cathy (Dale), Marie (Rick), Terry (Joe), Stephen and Samantha (Chris). He was the proud grandfather of 9 grandchildren; Jessica (Paul), Corey (Ann), Miranda (Justin), Marta (Mitch), Matthew (Bianca), Julia, Alanna, Jakob and Avery and 5 great grandchildren.
Hugh was a Christmas baby, born in Glasgow, Scotland on December 25th 1930. He immigrated to Canada in 1957 to build a better life for his family. At great personal sacrifice, he worked tirelessly at every job to bring the rest of his family to Canada. Hugh had a strong work ethic, he worked hard for everything he achieved in life and was proud of his ability to support his family and give us a great life. He worked as a millwright at General Motors of Canada for over 35 years, until his retirement in 1995.
Hughie was passionate about soccer, he loved everything about the sport. He loved playing, watching, talking about games, coaching the game and especially watching his children and grandchildren play the game. A long time member of Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 51, he played & coached the soccer club for many years, he will fondly be remembered by many as “Coach.” He played well into his 60’s, which 30 years ago was a testament to his talent, skill and physicality. He was a Member of the St. Catharines Celtic Supporters Club, where he really enjoyed socializing with other fans while watching ‘the games.’

A funeral mass will be celebrated at Our Lady of the Scapular Catholic Church 6557 Thorold Stone Road, Niagara Falls, ON. on February 1, 2022 at 10:30AM.
