Obituary of Dorothy Beatrice MacDonald

Passed away peacefully with her family by her side on Monday, December 31, 2018 at Gilmore Lodge, Fort Erie, ON, in her 88th year, one day short of her 65th wedding anniversary. She is survived by her loving husband Gordon, son Greg (Pam), daughter Laurie (Charles), grandchildren Paul MacDonald, Sandra (Andrew) Baines, and sister Janet Campbell. She is predeceased by her parents; and her siblings, Irene, Ruby, and Eric Campbell.

Dorothy was born in the family farmhouse near Hopeville, ON., (Proton Twp., Dundalk highlands area). She was a good student, and an outstanding track and field athlete. Her first employment was a bank teller, then elementary school teacher. She married on January 1, 1954 and in 1958, became a stay-at-home mother. In 1975, she began a very successful career as a Niagara Falls real estate agent, retiring in 1992. During retirement, she was a volunteer for several years at the Niagara Community Outreach (soup kitchen).

Dorothy was a talented artist, wrote both serious and humorous poetry, also authored published short stories. She lived by a code of high standards, with honesty, loyalty, and dependability being paramount. However, she was no shrinking violet and was as brave as a lion if occasion demanded. She was the heart of our family and will be sorely missed.

Unfortunately, Dorothy slowly entered a world of darkness, confusion and fear. It was the onset of late-life dementia (Alzheimer's). Eventually, home care was inadequate, and she became a resident of Gilmore Lodge Nursing Home, where she received excellent care and attention for the past 2 ½ years. We are so grateful to the wonderful staff at this facility.

Arrangements are entrusted with Essentials Cremation and Burial Services (905-354-2133). Following cremation, a private memorial service for Dorothy’s family will be officiated by Pastor Rex Smith, followed by a “Celebration of Life” luncheon. If desired, memorial donations may be made to the Gilmore Auxiliary, and/or the Friends of Gilmore. Online condolences may be shared on Dorothy's tribute page found at essentialscbs.com

I was so sorry to hear the sad news about Dorothy from Rex. I remember you both so well. We were all volunteers at the soup kitchen at the same time. You have my sincere sympathy. I know that no one can really know exactly what you are going through right now but I hope you will be helped knowing that people care about you and are thinking about you.
