Obituary of Donald Leonidas Lafontaine

Donald Leonidas Lafontaine, aged 81, died peacefully on Saturday, March 19th in St. Catharines, Ontario with family by his side. He was born February 16, 1941 in Maniwaki, Quebec to Mathias and Brigitte (née Lunam) Lafontaine. Don was the beloved husband of Sandra-Lea Lafontaine, with whom he enjoyed 44 years full of love and adventure. Father to Danny, Deborah, Jayar, and Brandy, and stepfather to Bob, David, Scott, and Sheri-Lea. Grandfather to Matthew, Audrey, Cody, Jennifer, Shane, Matthew, David, Scott, Ashley, Gary Jr., and Tia-Lea. The second eldest in a large family, he was a beloved and respected brother to his siblings Ronald, Claire, Nicole, Maryanne, Jean-Guy, Huguette, Lisette, Gerry, and Collette. He is predeceased by his mother and father, and his siblings Huguette, Lisette, Gerry, and Colette. He is sadly missed by many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

He was a passionate sportsman and coach who taught his children the value of hard work and passion through sport. His competitive spirit and determination drove him to pursue excellence in boxing, bodybuilding, hockey, golf, long-distance running, and many other sports. Like the Greek king with whom he shared a name, he had the heart of a lion. Don fulfilled a lifelong dream alongside his wife Sandra of building and operating a golf course. Located in Matheson, Ontario, the course—still in operation today—was then called Green Acres Golf and Country Club. He had a long career in mining and worked at many sites throughout Central and Eastern Canada over the decades. He was also a skilled woodworker—an interest he returned to many times throughout his life.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Essentials Cremation and Burial Services (905-354-2133). As per Donald’s wishes cremation has taken place. Memorial donations may be made to Jumpstart (jumpstart.canadiantire.ca) to help children in need to participate in sports and play. Online condolences may be shared on Donald’s tribute page found at EssentialsNiagara.com.
