Obituary of Allan "Al" Majander

AL MAJANDER
September 30, 1944- July 12, 2021

It is with heavy hearts and tremendous sadness that we announce the passing of Al Majander on Monday July 12th, 2021 at the age of 76 years. “Big Al” as many of you know him, was in the hospital for open heart surgery which went well but there were multiple complications that arose during the next 7 weeks while in hospital. To say that Al was competitive would be an understatement, he did not like to lose, and we know he fought until he had no more left to give.

Al was born in Welland Ontario but raised in Timmins. It is here where he met the love of his life, Lynne (née Dudleigh) at the young age of 15 years old and with whom he celebrated 55 years
of marriage. He was a wonderful Father to Greg (Joanne) and Kelly (Steve Blake). He was an amazing Grandfather to Tanner, Camryn and Andie Majander; Connor and Brooklyn Blake;
Sydney McCahon. A loving Uncle to Tim Sloan and Jennifer McCahon (Shaun). He was predeceased by his parents Andrew and Rose Majander and his sister Nancy Sloan.
Al was a fierce competitor in every aspect of his life. He excelled in his career, his athletic endeavors and as a human being. He was very passionate and dedicated to his family and friends as well as having a strong love for sports. Al played his Junior and College hockey in Northern Ontario and coached Midget AAA hockey in Ontario and Alberta for years. He was
fortunate to have had the opportunity to travel with teams internationally (Finland, Russia, Korea, Japan and USA). Al’s zest for life and enthusiasm was contagious, he made an
immediate impact one way or another on everyone he met. He had such a kind soul under his intimating demeanor, he would give his shirt off his back to a stranger and he loved everyone
unconditionally. Al will truly be missed by his family and friends. Our hearts ache so deeply but we feel so blessed and grateful to have so many wonderful memories and stories to share. In keeping with Allan's wishes, cremation has taken place. Arrangements have been entrusted to Essentials Cremation and Burial Services.

My sympathies to all of you. Oh the years of great friendship and wonderful memories. I remember the 6 of us that would go to the Northern College parties and spend nights studying for structural engineering classes. I thank you Al for your friendship and will always cherish that. Mimi and I always enjoyed our times together.

My sincere condolences to Lynne and Al’s family. I knew Al well as a classmate for several years at Central PS and TH&VS in Timmins in the 50’s and 60’s. He was a sweet guy, and always generous with his time for friends. We re-connected in the 1980’s when our daughters competed at provincial gymnastics finals. He will be missed. I have attached a picture of the 2 Als and Janet Estey from younger times about January, 1957 photo from Grade 8 science class that made the Timmins Press.

It is with great sorrow to lose a friend like Al,. we went to the same Public school where Al was always showing his athletic abilities. He was very popular in Timmins High school. We then met at Northern Institute.
We became very close when his family moved to Oakville/Toronto. I also met Al’s father when I worked at MacIntyre mine for the summer.

I had the honors of being the God Father to Kelly. This was a lovely man and a great family man. Love you and miss you Al.

Al was a great and wonderful human being. He was an awesome friend, volunteered for my Board of Directors at the Learning Centre in Arthur and was the best MC our fundraising event could ask for. I will never forget the laughter and fun Al brought to that event. I also learned from attending a campfire at Al’s house, that he was known as “one match Al”. Thanks to Connor, I was guided back a few steps. Al really was a great man and it was easy to see the love Al shared and had for his family. I’m so sorry for your loss.
