Obituary of Sharlene Carson

On Friday, April 12, 2024, our world lost a beautiful soul, one with boundless energy, love, and compassion, as Sharlene passed peacefully surrounded by her loved ones at the St. Catharines Hospital. Just six days prior, she was dancing and living her best life, celebrating her 66th birthday. She was the loving partner of Bill for 20 years. A beloved mother to Nicole (Max), Jennifer (Brandon), Paul (Stephanie), David, Chase, and Tyler, and a devoted grandmother to Shaunalee, Makenzie, Evan, Owen, Olivia, Alicia, Damian, and Darius. Sharlene was a dear sister to Dianne and Linda (née Karr) and will also be missed by her niece, Kim, her nephew, Jason, many cousins and by her best friend of 58 years, Cathy. She was predeceased by her parents, Robert and Lois.

Sharlene grew up cherishing her time with her parents, and often reflected upon many memories of the fishing trips she enjoyed with her father. As a young woman, her entrepreneurial spirit guided her to open her own local variety store in Port Dalhousie, once known as Sharlo's Variety. These early experiences of connection, leadership and care shaped her into the compassionate person she was known to be. She carried this love into her adulthood, where she became known as the neighbourhood mom, always ready to take anyone under her wings, with tough love and concern that always encouraged growth and independence. Her children, grandchildren and community saw her much more than a friend and relative, but as a true matriarch.

Sharlene's motto, "Live your best life" was not just a saying but a practice, evident in her love for dancing and her joy in celebrating life’s moments, big and small. As a classic rock enthusiast, she could be found supporting her son-in-law’s band, Jammr, attending their performances with pride and enthusiasm. Her home was a haven, always open and welcoming, providing comfort and a warm meal to anyone in need, especially those who were down on their luck. It was ingrained in her ways, to always take care of everyone else and she would selflessly put another person’s needs before her own.

Sharlene's love for nature was reflected in her collection of frogs and her affection for cardinals, both symbols of her vibrant spirit and enduring presence. She would often be heard saying "It is what it is!", undoubtedly a philosophy she lived by, that made her an adaptable and easy-going person, which made her beloved by many. She would often be seen with her radiant smile and took pride in her appearance, always leaving the house with grace and dignity. Above all, her roles as a mother and grandmother were where she drew the most pride, leaving behind a legacy of love and compassion that touched everyone she knew.

In accordance with Sharlene’s wishes, cremation has taken place and arrangements have been entrusted with Essentials Cremation and Burial Services. A gathering and time of remembering Sharlene will be held on Saturday, May 18, 2024 from 1pm to 4pm at New Apostolic Church, 3400 Schmon Parkway, Thorold. All family and friends are welcome to attend the celebration of Sharlene’s life. At a later date, her ashes will be interred with her mother and father at Victoria Lawn Cemetery, St. Catharines. In honour of Sharlene, memorial donations may be given to Start Me Up Niagara. Online condolences may be shared on Sharlene’s tribute page found at EssentialsNiagara.com.

Sending love to Nicole and her family from New York City. May God be with you all during this hard time.

Psalm 23:

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.

He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.

He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.
