Obituary of Margaret Elizabeth Agnew

Margaret Elizabeth Agnew (nee Higgins), passed away peacefully in Niagara-on-the-Lake on Monday, March 25, 2024, at the age of 75.

Born in Ballyclare, Northern Ireland, Margaret embarked on a life filled with love, compassion, and service to others. She is survived by her loving husband, James (Jim), her daughter Jackie (Jeff Stewart), and her cherished grandchildren Andrew, Evan, and Elly. Margaret was predeceased by her beloved son, Martin.

In 1976, Margaret and Jim made the courageous decision to move to Canada, where they settled in the Elora Fergus area. Margaret’s altruistic spirit led her to become involved in the community, serving as an active volunteer with the Elora Lioness and even assuming the role of president for a period of time. Her dedication to making a difference touched the lives of many.

Throughout her successful career in Human Resources at the University of Guelph, Margaret exemplified professionalism, integrity, and kindness. Her contributions to the field left a lasting impact and earned her the respect and admiration of colleagues and peers.

In 2014, Margaret and Jim relocated to Niagara-on-the-Lake to be closer to family, a decision that brought her immeasurable joy and fulfillment. Margaret cherished every moment spent with her loved ones, and her presence brought warmth and love to those around her.

Margaret will be deeply missed by her relatives and friends in Northern Ireland and throughout Southern Ontario. Her legacy of love, generosity, and community spirit will continue to inspire all who knew her.

In keeping with her wishes, cremation has taken place. Margaret’s celebration of life will be held at a future date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Lions of Canada Fund for LCIF (Lions Clubs International Fund).

To honour the memory of Margaret, a tree will be planted in the Wall-Custance Memorial Forest at The Arboretum of the University of Guelph and her name will appear on a plaque in the dedication grove. Please check www.wallcustance.com/wc-memorial-forest/ during the first week of September 2024 for details on the installation of this year’s plaque.

I was so sad to read of Margaret’s passing in the Wellington Advertiser. I knew Marg from the University of Guelph and she was always such a wonderful lady. She always had a smile and we had some good laughs together with my sister Mary (HR). My condolences to her entire family.
