In Loving Memory of

Obituary of Robert "Dean" West
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Robert “Dean” West on April 26, 2024, at the age of 86, we share this tribute to a remarkable man. Dean’s journey was one of enduring love, resilience, and unwavering generosity.Dean leaves behind his cherished life partner and devoted wife, Jeanne West. Their love story was not a typical one, beginning when Jeanne was just 15 years old. Despite the challenges they faced, including Jeanne’s mother’s protective watch and the passage of time, their bond only grew stronger. Finally, on September 18, 1998, Dean and Jeanne married, together for more than 40 years, the last 25 as husband and wife. Though dementia took Dean from us far too soon, the depth of their love remains etched in our hearts.
Dean will be missed by his children, Nancy, Rick (Debbie), Tim (Tammy), as well as Jeanne’s children, including Bev Demers and Bibianne Dubé Gulla, whom he helped raise. Affectionately known as “Papa,” Dean was a pillar of support and love for his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, attending their sporting events and school functions with pride and enthusiasm. His presence, both on the sidelines and in their lives, was immeasurable.
Throughout his 33 years of dedicated service at Atlas Steel and his involvement with St. John’s Ambulance, where he shared his expertise in first aid, Dean exemplified diligence and compassion. A true handyman, he possessed a knack for fixing anything, from mechanical to electrical problems, and was always willing to lend a helping hand to those in need.
Dean’s generosity knew no bounds, evident in his selfless gesture of treating his entire family to an unforgettable trip to Disney World. He cherished simple joys, like Sunday drives for ice cream with Jeanne, and delighted in hosting gatherings by his pool, where the sounds of “Black Betty” blaring from his jukebox filled the air with laughter and joy.
Cremation has taken place and arrangements are entrusted to Essentials Cremation and Burial Services. Dean's family will privately celebrate his life. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer Society of Canada.
As we bid farewell to Dean, we find solace in knowing that he is at peace, free from suffering. Though he may be gone, his spirit lives on in the countless lives he touched and the memories we hold dear. Rest in peace, dear Papa. You will forever be loved and remembered.

Rick and Nancy my condolences on the passing of your Dad.
Dean was part of the Management Team in the North Plant Finishing Operations of Atlas Specialty Steels when I was posted there from 1987 to 1990. He was such a great and unique character to share time with. His sense of humour and on the job professionalism will never be forgotten.
So sorry for your loss,
I will always remember Bill coming home from work and telling me how Dean ate all of his pickled beets, or whatever he had taken for suppers – so I started packing two lunches – one for each of them and sending and extra jar or two of whatever I had just made.
Please know that Dean will always be in our hearts.
Bill & Wendy Barnes
Rick – I’m very sorry to hear about your father.’s passing and would like to extend my deepest condolences. I spent a few months mentoring under Dean in the late 80’s at the Atlas. He was a character but always told it like it was! He will be missed.
Tom
My deepest sympathies Jeanne and family.
RIP Dean
