Obituary of Dave Thompson

Quietly after a brief, complicated surgery, Dave slipped away, Kit as always by his side. David, Gran Dave, Grandpa, Smokey, Davey, and Dave to all those who knew him. He will be missed by all his cherished girls. Daughters Andrea and Karin. A son-in-law or two, Bill Durrant and Cutch Winstead were welcomed into the family (of girls.) Grand girls Sarah (Dave), Stephanie (Craig), Samantha (EJ), Sheridan, P.atricia, Layla, Seven, Elly and grandboy Thomas will miss their grandpa Dave. The great grand ones Evan, Gavin, Leila, Jaxon, Carter, Charlotte, Savana, Xavier and Mariah will remember and miss his presence in their lives. Predeceased by his dad Charlie (1961), mom Ida (2009), brother Oscar (2003) and sister Doris (2018).

If you knew him it might have been from the Terry Lea, a longtime family business in the Town & Country Plaza where he worked alongside his mom, Ida until 1996. The Terry Lea was the family business from 1955 to 1996. Ida, Charlie, then Oscar and Dave and eventually Kit all worked to make it a destination for fine clothes, good service and current fashion. Dave's accountant training kept the books in shape, and his home finances accurate to the penny.

After the store closed a career change was in the works. Always a driver, drag racing in power cars into his 30's, he changed his suit and tie, chardonnay and Merlot for jeans, cowboy boots and a beer. Off to be a big rig driver. Not content just to drive, he went to Greenbay Wisconsin to take the ice road driving instruction for his big rig licensing. He could navigate many serious conditions and park those things backwards into any tight space.

Dave spent many years as a keen hockey player, playing from 1951-1970 on the Junior A hockey team. His picture still on the Wall of Fame. Hockey continued to be an activity for many years along with cycling, tennis, water and cross-country skiing, He shared cheers and enthusiasm with many of the grandgirls about the Stanley Cup.

The family extends their heartfelt thanks to Dr. Scher, the staff at Douglas Memorial Hospital, and especially the palliative care team for making Dave comfortable in his final days. Dr. McIntyre and particularly Dr. Chaudhry at Hamilton General for their compassionate clear communications regarding Dave's health. Dr. Alison MacTavish, our family physician, gave countless hours to him during his time in her practice.

In keeping with his wishes, cremation has taken place. A celebration of life to be announced. If desired, memorial donations may be made to the Niagara Health Foundation (Douglas Memorial Palliative Care - Fort Erie Site).

My Dear Kit. I was devastated when Andrea called me last Sunday to tell me that Dave had passed away. It is not always easy to offer condolences to the surviving family members and, speaking personally it is difficult for me as i had come to love and admire Dave as a dear friend. Although we only knew each other for a relatively short time, considering we shared the same age, I always looked forward to the times I was able to sit and chat with him at all those family gatherings I was invited to take part in. You are in my thoughts and prayers Kit and if I can help you in any way, please let me know.
