Obituary of Violet Kalcic

Passed away peacefully at the Greater Niagara General Hospital on Sunday November 7, 2021 at the age of 86.

Violet was born in Montreal, Quebec on July 20, 1935. As a young girl, Violet moved with her family to Niagara Falls (Stamford) in 1947. Shortly after their move, young Violet started helping out her parents in their new store. For the following 30 years Violet could be seen behind the counter of her parents corner store “Emil's Variety and Cabins” on the corner of St. Paul Ave and Riall Street. Violet told many stories of how the family started out with offering the sale of gasoline, cigars and cigarettes for the local men, and eventually growing to add things like comic books, penny candies, pop and snacks, to toiletries and even ice cream for the kids in the neighbourhood. Violet became well known to everyone.

Her nieces and nephews were spoiled by their aunt.
Upon leaving the house she always had a little bag of candy to give each and every one of them, and in the summer they’d be treated with ice cream. Violet worked the orchard and the Queen Street and Main Street markets on weekends.
Later on in life Violet found herself working at the snack bar at Delta Bingo where she made many friends.
Violet was a parishioner of Our Lady of the Scapular church for over 60 years.

Violet will be fondly remembered by her nieces and nephews; Joe (Dawn) Pierrynowski, Victor Pierrynowski, Gloria (Tom) Hind, Tom (Laura) Pierrynowski, Greg (Gail) Kalcic, Kathy McMurray, Anthony (Francine) Kalcic, Ted (Laura) Kalcic and many great nieces and nephews.

Predeceased by her parents Lucya Kalcic (1953), Emil Kalcic (1977) and step mother Neva Kalcic (1993),
her brother Vincent Kalcic (1975), her sister-in-law Shirley (2002), her nephew Mel McMurray (2018),
her sister Emily Pierrynowski (2016), her brother-in-law Joe Pierrynowski (2001) and her niece Eleanor Campbell (2008).

RIP Violet, Violet never liked to ask for help, but being her neighbours for the past 6 years we did what we could. First year we lived here violet was out on her riding lawn mower in the heat that was the last time we let her cut her grass, she rarely asked us for help, Eric always made sure her drive was plowed so she could go to her weekly grocery trips and church, fiercely independent and a lady of few words… although she rarely came out to thank us or talk to us she would peak through the front curtain to see us that was thanks enough. She was recently out in her front yard when I and was telling me about the 3 maple trees she planted when she first moved here, the ones I regularly bonked my head on while riding around on the mower cause she didn’t want any of the lower branches cut off… She said “those three were my saplings and they will be here long after me”. She was right I hope they stand strong for a very long time Violet!
