In Loving Memory of

Valerie Cywinski

1926 - 2023

Obituary of Valerie Cywinski

Passed away peacefully on March 8, 2023 at the age of 96. Loving wife to the late Arkadjusz (2007). Valerie is survived by her children Bruno Cywinski (Carol Davis) and Sylvia Kenyon (Wayne Yates). She will be lovingly remembered by many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Predeceased by her sister Emily Kristapsons.

Valerie was born in Riga, Latvia on December 27, 1926. When she was a teenager, she and her sister escaped Latvia during the German occupation in WWII, finding safety wherever they could in Europe. At the end of the war they settled in England, and it was here that Valerie began her training as a Nursing Assistant. Shortly after, she met Arkady when he was released from a POW camp. Together, they immigrated to Canada in 1952, where Valerie would begin her career here as a Nurse Aide, working for 28 years until her retirement in 1987. She enjoyed spending her summers basking in the sun, and in her spare time could often be found sewing, quilting and gardening.

The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to the wonderful staff at Woodlands of Sunset, especially in the Maples wing, for their patience, compassion and extraordinary care. Thank you for always going above and beyond and making sure Val was comfortable in her final days.

In keeping with Valerie's wishes, cremation has taken place. A private family service will be held when Valerie is interred at her final place of rest. If desired, memorial donations may be made to Woodlands of Sunset. Arrangements are entrusted to Essentials Cremation and Burial Services.

Sincere condolences to Sylvia, Bruno and families. We have so many wonderful
memories of Val in friendship and as colleagues. After so many years we still go back in time and talk about the fun times we shared. The beautiful picture of your mom totally captures that fun and laughter in her eyes.
Rest in peace Val with your beloved Arkady.

Vallie is someone who had a huge influence on my life. She is my dearest aunt who helped me during the worst time in my life when I came to Canada 25 years ago. She was like a mother to me. She healed my broken life by caring for my mental and physical well-being. I will never forget my first summer here at her cottage, our long walks along the lake, long talks and the most delicious food I ever had.
I am very grateful that I had the chance to play for her music she liked on the piano for her last birthday at Woodlands.
I will keep in my heart the memory of her loving nature, her smile and her compassion for me.

What a beautiful picture of your dear Mom Valerie. She was one of my favourite people to work with at the Welland Hospital. She was a fine Nurse and very loveable person. I know she loved her husband and family fiercely. One evening after our afternoon shift Valerie invited a couple of us to her home and she made us strawberry crepe’s with whipped cream, so very delicious. My memories of Valerie are fond and I know she is Heaven bound. May she Rest In Peace..
