Obituary of Steven Veitch
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Steve on January 9, 2026 at Hospice Niagara’s Walker House. Steve will be greatly missed by Eva, his best friend and wife of 42 years. He was the proud father of Alex (Cory), the cherished son of Marion (predeceased) and Kenneth (predeceased) and beloved brother of Vonnie Wells (Doug), Clayton Veitch (predeceased) and Vickie Russard (Tom predeceased).Steve retired from a career in contract mining and loved spending his time outdoors, biking and cross country skiing. He was an adventurer and a night sky admirer. He had a passion for aviation. During the summers, he could be found on the backroads riding his motorcycle, or listening to classic rock while barbecuing and sipping on baco noir or good quality tequila. He was truly one of a kind and loved by many. He had a huge heart and a great sense of humour. Over the past 18 months, Steve demonstrated incredible strength and bravery, fighting his cancer diagnosis with everything he had, to stay with us for as long as he could. He was extremely grateful for the support he received at Princess Margaret and Juravinski and for all of the doctors and healthcare workers involved in his care.
Blood and platelet donations allowed us to have an extra year and a half of memories with Steve. If you can donate blood, platelets or stem cells, please do. You are making a life changing impact on the person receiving them, as well as their loved ones.
Donations to The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation would be greatly appreciated by the family.
Steve’s celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Dear Eva and Alex,
I was deeply saddened and brought to tears when I read about Steve’s passing. He was truly one of the best friends I ever had, and someone I thought of often over the years.
Life became busy as I raised my own two sons, and although we lost touch, he was never forgotten. Hearing of his passing has reminded me just how special our friendship was and how thankful I am for the time we shared — riding our bikes, listening to music, or sitting by the fire drinking beer and wondering where life would take us.
Steve was a great and honorable man. He left a small piece of that greatness with everyone he befriended, and I’m sure a much larger piece with his family. I hope it brings some comfort to know that he left a lasting mark on the people who knew him.
My deepest, heartfelt condolences to you both as well as Vonnie.
Nothing but fond memories of Steven and his whole family and of course Eva. Kind, friendly and understated comes to mind. So sorry for your loss.
I am so sorry to hears of Steve’s passing. I remember him fondly from my early years in Smooth Rock. Sincere condolences to Eva and his sister Vonnie. Take care
My deepest condolences to Eva, family and friends. Good memories with Steve in Smooth Rock Falls. Shared many laughs! Rest in Peace Steve.
My condolences to Eva and Vonnie and their respective families. May your memories keep the essence of Steve forever in your hearts and mind. I will remember fondly our bike riding years.
Sincere condolences to Eva and family and all who loved him. When Steven was growing up we were next door neighbours in SRF and I baby-sat all 4 Veitch children. Sending prayers to all at this difficult time.
My deepest condolences to Eva and the whole family.
My condolences to the family. I have such fond memories of biking with Steven in our teenage years. Steven on his BSA (such a beautiful bike), Denis Noonan on his Honda, and me on a Yamaha. Loved those rides together. I still ride today and often reminisce of riding friends from days long past. RIP Steve.
I’m so sorry to hear of his passing after suffering from this treadful disease. My sincerest ncondolences to Eva, Vonnie and to the entire family.
Our deepest condolences to all the family and friends
Our deepest sympathies to Eva and family. Having lived in Smooth Rock Falls we knew the Veitch family very well. I was friends with Vicky growing up. Gary was friends with Steven. Rest in Peace.
We have very fond memories of camping with Uncle Steve almost every summer growing up. He always had a story or a joke (often to do with our moms cooking), and we were lucky to have him as part of our childhoods. We were both glad to be able to visit with him before he passed; he will be very missed. Love you, Uncle Steve!
Dear Eva & Alex,
We were so lucky to have known Steve & Eva for the past 40 yrs and we were happy connect with you & Steve last summer, even it it was in the hospital.
While we are sad that cancer has taken Steve, we are glad that he is nolonger suffering. His passing will never take away the good memories in my mind, like when he caught me doing time studies at the crest of the Detour Mine. Or when he was operating the hoist at the YD Mine and I was on a “directors tour.”.
You were a man of good humour & many skills, I’ll think of you every time I am in a plane.
Huggs!
Joe & Anna
Eva — I am so sorry to hear about Steve’s passing.
Vonnie, Eva, Alex and families,
We are so sorry to hear of Steve’s passing. We enjoyed getting to know Steve and Eva during our vacations with the Wells family in Prince Edward County and the Muskokas. So glad they joined us. Lots of fun and memories. He fought the good fight and lived longer with the help and love of his family. We know he will be truly missed.
Although we only knew Steve and Eva a short time he was and will remain dear to our hearts forever
Eva and Alex, Steve fought a hard battle. I will always think of his, sense of humour and unique kind and respectful ways. His memory will live on in all our hearts. Take care at this difficult time.
My deepest condolences. You are all in my thoughts and prayers
Steve was such an important presence in our family for as long as I can remember. He wasn’t just a brother in law; he was a big brother in every sense of the word. I am so grateful for the wonderful memories and he will continue to live in all the family stories we tell. RIP ❤️
Our sincere condolences
Eva, Alex and family, Dennis and I send our deepest condolences. Steve will be greatly missed by all. His sense of humour and generosity will never be forgotten.
Steve you were a bright light and always there for all who loved you. For me it was right from my start – an anchor, a safe harbour… home. My heart will ache for you forever more.
My memories of Steve enhance the colourful character his family has already described. I will always cherish the glasses of wine we shared and the laughter he could elicit with introducing me to old animated shows he and Alex and Eva watched. Thank you Steve for touching my heart ❤️
