Obituary of Stephen Burns

We are profoundly sad to announce the passing of Stephen from liver cancer on Saturday June 3, 2023 at St. Catharines Hospital. Stephen was born in Niagara Falls on December 20, 1965 to Hugh (2022) and Mary (1981) Burns. He will be deeply missed by his daughter Alanna Burns. Cherished brother of Cathy Niven (Dale), Marie Tabaka (Rick), and Terry Mele (Joe). He will fondly be remembered by his nieces and nephews, Jessica Harris (Paul), Corey Niven (Ann), Miranda Parro (Justin), Marta Tabaka (Mitch), and Matthew and Julia Mele and his great nieces and nephews.

As a result of a serious car accident, the last 2-1/2 years of Stephen’s life were extremely difficult. Every day was a challenge as he battled his way back from a traumatic brain injury and debilitating physical injuries to be able to live independently. He faced these challenges with determination and bravery and was so proud of his achievements. Through it all he remained a diehard Boston Bruins fan and a passionate Celtic supporter. His favourite pastime was watching TV especially sports, Seinfeld and Storage Hunters. Stephen had a great sense of humour and was well liked by everyone who met him.

The family would like express their heartfelt gratitude to the dedicated team of support workers at Connect Communities and to Samantha Glowinski, Victoria Sweetman, Grant, Peter and Leah who helped him achieve his goal of living on his own. Stephen will be in our hearts forever. Cremation has taken place in accordance with Stephens wishes. A private family burial will take place at a later date. In honour of his memory, donations can be made to Project SHARE or Out of the Cold.

Get ready mum and dad, the “golden boy” is coming home.

To Stephen’s Family,
I was the newest member of Stephen’s team…but he has left a lasting impression with me. He was such a fighter. Stronger in many ways then most people I know. And his sense of humor always made me chuckle, even during his time in the hospital. I am glad to have had the opportunity to know him, regardless of how short. He spoke of his sister’s with gratitude and of his daughter with such pride and love. You will all be in my daily prayers along with Stephen. I’m so sorry for your loss!

In loving memory ...
I/we pledge to make a memorial donation.

Stevie Wonder. Absolutely one the toughest and most resilient people I’ve ever met. He had more than his share of knock downs in life but he always got back up.
Steve was constantly smiling with a great sense of humor. He laughed and delivered his line “You know I have a brain injury ” whenever he messed up ( like losing his hearing aide again). It was classic and he drove his sisters nuts.
I’m going to miss him.

First, I’d like to send my sincere condolences to Steve’s Family. During his most difficult days, Steve was still able to find humor during his stay at CONNECT. Steve’s laughter was so contagious. His smile, literally lit up the room. I’m forever grateful, that I not only had the opportunity to support Steve, but to see such an incredible change during his stay at CONNECT. Steve will always hold a Special Place in my Heart ❤️ Rest in Peace Burns. You are truly going to be missed, beyond words.
With Love,
Chrissy
