Obituary of Shirley Ann Smith

Passed away peacefully with family by her side on June 17, 2025 at the age of 77. Beloved spouse and best friend of Ron Cortiula for 23 wonderful years. Loving mother to Don Smith (Pam) and Tom Smith (Christine). Proud Nana and Grandma to Maverick, Cassandra, Holly, and Lyall, and great-grandmother to Luca, Reyn, and Elizabeth. Cherished sister to Joyce Green (Brian) and Les Knight (Wendy), and aunt to many nieces and nephews. She will also be remembered by Ron’s children, Mike and Ashley Cortiula. Shirley was a proud member of the Black Creek community and will be dearly missed by her many friends and neighbours.

Shirley was born and raised in Vineland, and spent many years working on the family fruit farm before dedicating herself to greenhouse work. Known for her expertise in propagation, Shirley contributed her talents to Gilbert Greenhouse, Hendriks Greenhouses, and later retired from Sunrise Greenhouses. Shirley will be remembered for her congenial personality and her love of cooking.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to Dr. Kim Scher and the compassionate staff at Douglas Memorial Hospital for their care and support.

In keeping with Shirley's wishes, cremation has taken place. A celebration of Shirley’s life will be held on August 17, 2025 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Black Creek Leisure Homes Community Centre, 3033 Townline Road, Stevensville.

Aunt Shirley I am so sad to hear of your passing. I have so many fond memories of my teenage years working with you and mom (Louise Jordan) on the farm. We worked hard but always had fun doing it…remember the lone peach hanging in the north field that you were so patiently waiting to ripen! I certainly enjoyed that big delicious peach during my break from picking in the strawberry rows 🙂 You are remembered and will always be missed.

Aunt Shirley, you will be so missed, your amazing smile and contagious laugh was so uplifting. I had the best times in the summer while at the fruit farm while growing up. Thank you for being part of that. Till we see each other again. Love Ronda, Steve, Jonathan, Tristan and Anna.
