Obituary of Shirley Lorain Merritt

Shirley Loraine Merritt passed away peacefully in the early hours of July 10, 2024. She leaves behind her best friend and husband of 61 years, Wayne Merritt, and her devoted son Dave (Brenda) Merritt. Shirley will be deeply missed by her grandchildren Alexander (Cheri), Alexis (Steve), and her great-grandson Kal. She is also survived by her brother Roy (Carol), and cherished extended family members.

Born as the fourth youngest of eleven children, Shirley enjoyed a fulfilling life enriched by her passions and relationships. She dedicated ten years to working at the casino, and her leisure time was often spent indulging in the excitement of slot machines, reflecting her joyful spirit and love for adventure.

Shirley's creative talents were evident in her passion for baking, particularly her beloved seasonal pies. She also expressed her artistic side through crafting, renowned for her intricately designed "Bee Bears" that brought joy to many. Alongside Wayne, Shirley found immense happiness in camping and exploring various destinations across Ontario. Their shared commitment extended to managing Grey Stone Manor in Queenston, where they lovingly cared for the property and created enduring memories together.

In keeping with Shirley’s wishes, cremation has taken place and arrangements are entrusted to Essentials Cremation and Burial Services.

Shirley Loraine Merritt will be remembered for her warmth, creativity, and unwavering devotion to her family and friends. Her legacy lives on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know her.

“Tootie” was one of the finest women I have ever met.She loved the world and everyone in it. So kind and gentle and I loved being around her. She loved to cook for people and I loved to eat, T’was a match made in heaven. I will forever miss her and my heart goes out to Uncle Wayne .
