Obituary of Sandra Grooteman

Sandra Grooteman passed away peacefully on March 22, 2022.
Sadly missed by her wife Sue, her parents, Pete and Truis, her brothers Peter (Petra), Paul (Petra K), her sister Carin, her nieces Nikki, Jetta and Kirsten, her nephews Thomas, Lucien and Martijn and family and friends especially Tamar and family in the Netherlands and in Canada, her sister-in-law Lysa, her nephews James, Evan and Sean and her neighbourhood family and many friends and her companion Joey. Sandra was recognized by the King and Queen of the Netherlands for her community services. She advocated for the local food bank, Community gardens, Women’s Center and started a group to bring all mindsets together regardless of race or religion. She travelled the world and met the Dalhi Lama and the Rolling Stones and countless others. She was the president of the Summerlea Association for years. She was instrumental in achieving street signs with poppies for recognition of our veteran neighbours. Sandra loved cooking, nature, gardening, photography and people who crossed her path, such as Seniors, The Ladies Auxiliary and a special place in her heart was coaching her baseball team of the Special Olympics. Her heart selflessly reached out to others in need and lived life to the fullest.
As an expression of sympathy, donations to Summerlea Association would be appreciated. Please contact Sue Duskoff.

Sandra was always such a bright and lively presence in our neighbourhood. A wonderful next door neighbour, and a selfless and giving person to all who crossed her path. She will be greatly missed, and her absence will be acutely felt around Summerlea. Our condolences to Sue and the entire family.
