Obituary of Ryan Russell Shields
Holding SpaceOn December 20, 2021 at 17:27, our family said our final goodbyes to our dear sweet Ryan. We are grateful and touched to the core by the amazing outpouring of love, compassion, and support from all our friends and family. Your light, your gifts of the heart, your presence, and the boundless supply of food and fresh flowers brought by the house nourished our hearts and souls through the days of holding vigil for Ryan.
Breath is Central. Breath Links Birth and Death
Ryan was born at home into the hands of midwives, on July 19, 1985, his family surrounding him. He died at home in the arms of his family, midwives and friends surrounding us all. His death as gentle as his birth; from his first breath to his last, Ryan’s presence touched all our lives in so many positive ways. He taught us the most important lessons in life, he inspired unfettered and unconditional love, and he left us with a deeper understanding of how to move through life one breath at a time.
We breathe deeply and purposefully.
You Are Our Village
We have so many thank yous in our hearts. Family, friends, and Ryan’s workers, all of you embraced our family and accommodated our needs so Ryan could be included in celebrations, events and everyday life. You rallied around him and made it possible for him to live at home with us. You helped us care for him. In doing so you’ve left an indelible imprint in our lives. The presence of each one of you continues to be our greatest gift. You are our village.
Our Children
There are no words that suffice to honour and express the gratitude we feel for our children, we only have tears of deep love and immense pride. Together they are the foundation, the pillars, and the roof that protect and nourish the soul of our family. We are flooded with memories and stories, and all that we have learned about love, joy, patience, perseverance, courage, strength, and acceptance through them. Always there for Ryan, always there for us. Thank you. We love you deeply.
Ryan experienced the embrace of a whole community of family and friends, and lived a life born in love, fiercely surrounded in love, and completed in love.
We are no longer afraid.
