Obituary of Robert Gordon Akitt

Robert Gordon Akitt passed away peacefully in Waterdown after a brief illness on Saturday, January 13, 2024, at the age of 90 years. Loving father of Sherri Lynn Standish (Ron), Pamela Joyce Teckoe (John), and Robert Gordon Akitt Jr. (Sheri). Proud grandfather of Geoffrey (Jenn), Cameron (Katherine), Graham (Melissa), Kyle (Colleen), Dany, Katelyn (Nick), John (Shannon), Kirstie (Jon), Ryan and Christopher. Great-grandfather of Noella, Madalynn, Olivia, Autumn, and Sophia.  Gord was pre-deceased by his devoted wife of 57 years Mary Joyce Akitt (nee Greer) and his beloved son, Robert John Akitt.

Gord was raised in Guelph, Ontario and lived most of his married life in Burlington. He spent his working years as an accountant, later becoming self-employed with his own accounting firm, R.G. Akitt & Associates.

Gord’s penchant for card games and his skill in playing bridge led him to become a respected ACBL Bridge Life Master and bridge Director and, later, together with Joyce, he ran his own bridge studio, ABC Studios in Burlington. Gord and Joyce enjoyed many long-lasting friendships formed through their 40-year membership at Roseland Park and Country Club.

Gord’s other hobbies included his lifelong passion for fishing, camping, watching NHL hockey, and playing many racquet sports including tennis, squash, and badminton.

Gord loved a good joke … to tell one or to hear one.  We will always remember how much he laughed hardest at his own jokes.

In accordance with Gord’s wishes, cremation has taken place. Arrangements are entrusted with Essentials Cremation and Burial Services. Please forward your condolences and remembrances to them accordingly.

A private family celebration of life will take place later in the Spring.  In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Alexander Place, Waterdown, ON.

Gord was a great guy and an important figure in our local bridge community. He and Joyce loved to entertain and we enjoyed many food and fun filled evenings of bridge, thanks to them. I like to think we were close friends on a personal level as well as “bridge friends”. If not for Gord I would never have found a way to learn and play bridge. He is greatly missed by all and never forgotten!

I only knew Gord since the summer of this year when my mom moved into Alexander Place. He sat across from her at the table and he was absolutely lovely. He was a good man, always pleasant and smiling – always wore a great hat. How lovely to read he had such a full life with a big loving family. My heart goes out to the family and please accept our family’s deepest condolences.
