Obituary of Patrick James Gallagher

It is with heavy and broken hearts we announce the loss of our much loved cousin, uncle, and friend, Patrick “Pat” Gallagher. With family at his side, on May 1, 2022, Pat passed away after a brief but difficult and courageous battle with cancer. He had, just weeks ago, celebrated his 60th birthday.

Patrick was the much loved and favoured cousin of many, but especially to Lorrie Daniels (Mark), Terrie Finelli (Tony), and Wayne Hewitt (Dawn), and a very special Uncle to Meghan Milner (Matt), Kelly Borojevic (Matija), and Jacob Antonio (Amanda). He will be missed by his friends, especially by his closest friends Carol and Gary Dyck.

All who met him loved him and knew him as a gentle giant; a teddy bear with an enormous heart and his booming laughter. Patrick was predeceased by his sisters Wendy (1962) and Cheryl (1983), his father Don (1987), his sister Faye (1999), and most recently his mom, Betty (2015).
Patrick grew up in Queenston and played many sports in his youth. After declining an opportunity to play for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in 1983, Patrick became a plumber and worked at Warren’s Plumbing and Heating in Niagara-on-the-Lake until an injury occurred. He was re-educated at Niagara College and became a certified building inspector in 2003 for the County of Brant, in Paris, Ontario. This was a role he thoroughly enjoyed alongside his work family.

Patrick was well known in Niagara. He continued to enjoy all sports as a spectator throughout his life, especially his Buffalo Bills. His happy place was at his cottage in Ahmic Harbour, in Lorrie’s kitchen, or anywhere singing with Meghan.

The family is so grateful to Dr. Michelle Ghert for her excellent care and advocacy on Patrick’s behalf, to our Social Worker Kristen, whose support was invaluable, and to the nursing staff at Juravinski Cancer Hospital on F4 for their care and compassion.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Essentials Cremation and Burial Services (905-354-2133). As per Patrick’s wishes cremation has taken place. The family will host a celebration of life on May 29, 2022 at the Niagara on the Lake Community Centre, 14 Anderson Lane, Niagara on the Lake, the Simpsons Room, from 12:00pm - 4:00pm as maximum room capacity at any one time can be 70 people. Please view Pat’s tribute page for further information. Memorial donations may be made to Cystic Fibrosis Canada. Online condolences may be shared on Patrick’s tribute page found at EssentialsNiagara.com.

We were heartbroken to hear the news. Pat was part of our cottage family over the past 6 years and we enjoyed many good tails at the lake. A man that always keeps you in good company with laughter and sports trivia. Our extended family will be planting a tree for Pat and we have made a donation to CF in his memory. We have put aside the Christmas card he sent which will now be part of our decorations each year. We dearly miss him and will keep the sound of his chuckle close to our hearts. Big blanket hugs from Joe, Suzy, Curtis, Jenny, Wyatt, Lane, Joe and Ann-Marie

Pat and I worked together at the County of Brant. He was a funny, generous and all around great person. We shared a lot of laughs talking about sports, music and fishing. His encyclopedic knowledge of sports stats and events was second to none, and nobody told stories better than him. His signature cackle would always put a smile on my face. The world was a better place because of him and he will be greatly missed. My condolences to his family.

The County of Brant would like to extend our condolences to Pats family and friends. Pat had been with the county since 2003 and held a variety of positions. He was very active in our profession and was a chapter chair for the Grand Erie Chapter of the Ontario Building Officials Association, he was also an active member of the board for the Ontario Plumbing Inspectors Association. Pat was a dedicated and experienced building inspector and was our go to guy for all the plumbing related code questions.
Pat was very memorable at our work functions and had been the long standing Santa Claus and the work Christmas party.

He will be missed. Rest in peace Patman.

I’ve known Pat since high school. We went to the final four in New Orleans with Dean and Casey , memories I will always cherish. Always could count on a Christmas card from Pat each year and am so thankful we were able to talk this Christmas. Like all of us Pat was a real true blue and great Bills fan. Crazy times were had by all and Pat was always in the mix. Pat was a great friend and I am going to miss him.

Love you always big guy. Doug Campbell

My sympathy goes out to the family of Pat. Anyone who knew him knows he was an amazing athelete and a great friend with a big heart. For me my friendship with Pat began at NDSS playing cards on a spare and then slo-pitch when he was always going for that extra base. And then there was the Bills games, every game was like a new chapter in a book. I will miss those good times and his laughter. Pat I know you will always be with us and now you are with our other Bills Mafia brothers Rod, Grant and John. Have a good game Pat.

We were so sad to hear the passing of Pat. I grew up around him as did many of my friends at a time when you either had to pick up a phone or just show up at the house. He coached me in ball then we coached together in hockey, and just hung out. Starting in the late 80’s and through the early 90’s, Pat, myself and a group of us had season tickets to the Bills games. The friendship and memories will last forever.. Gone too soon my friend. God Bless

We were just talking about as I used to call him “my Patty Cakes” of his time working for us at Butlers Den. He was first my protector. When I worked the bar late at night he would stay to make sure I and our other lady bartenders were safe. He always was there to lend a hand, which turned into me asking him if he wanted to work there. He worked in the kitchen and I could tell countless stories that made us laugh until our faces hurt. I got to know his Mom in later years playing cards at Kinsmen euchre nights.
So sad for all of his family and close friends as I know first hand what a terrific guy he was. 💔😢

I am so sorry for this loss of Patrick. I grew up in Queenston and knew the Gallagher family when they lived on Highlander.
Betty, Patrick’s mom was my baseball coach when I was young. I was sorry to hear of her passing also. I played baseball for many years after.
I babysat both Cheryl and Faye both beautiful young girls dealing with a condition they did not choose. I was amazed how cheerful they were and I thought of them often over the years.
I babysat Patrick also, always happy, smiling and I totalling see how this little guy turned out to be a teddy bear. That was his nature right from the start.
They are all together now and for those he left behind, find comfort knowing he has joined his family.
Rest In Peace.
