Obituary of Oskar Christian Wiinholt
Oskar Christian Wiinholt passed away peacefully on January 29, 2026, following a long and courageous battle with cancer. Born in Denmark on October 30, 1951, Oskar immigrated to Canada as a young child in 1957. He spent his formative years in Etobicoke and attended York University before moving to the Niagara Region to study at Brock University, eventually making the area his long-time home.A man of diverse skills and a passion for craftsmanship, Oskar’s career was defined by his service to others. He began as a dedicated school teacher, and then spent time at Arc Industries, where he found great fulfillment supporting and working alongside adults with developmental disabilities. He later shared his love for artistry by teaching woodworking at the St. Catharines General Hospital, before bringing his hard-working spirit to Forty Creek, from which he eventually retired.
Despite his quiet exterior, Oskar possessed a steady character and a curious mind. In his youth, he could often be found listening to classic rock or riding his motorcycle. He remained an avid reader throughout his life, keeping a keen eye on politics and world events. In retirement, Oskar stayed active at the senior centre, where he regularly played table tennis and badminton. Above all, Oskar cherished the simple pleasures: a thoughtful book, and the joy of sharing a good meal and conversation with his family.
Oskar is survived by his mother, Susie Wiinholt, and his brother, Peter Wiinholt. He was predeceased by his father, Jorgan Wiinholt. He leaves behind his children: Kris Wiinholt (Karla McCullagh), David (Barbara) Wiinholt, and Karen (Tyler) Berketa, along with their mother, Helene Wiinholt. He was a proud grandfather to Violet, Caleb, Bennett, and Corbin. He will be fondly remembered by his extended family in Denmark, who traveled to Canada many times over the years.
His strength in the face of illness was an inspiration to all. Oskar’s family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to the Niagara Health oncology unit for their dedication and expertise. Special thanks are also extended to the Niagara Health at Home team, with heartfelt appreciation for the exceptional care and support provided by Karam and Irina, who allowed Oskar to remain comfortable in his preferred surroundings. Finally, the family thanks the staff and volunteers at Hospice Niagara for their immense compassion during his final days.
In keeping with Oskar’s wishes, cremation has taken place. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his honour to Hospice Niagara.
