In Loving Memory of Lois Nelson

A Celebration of a Life Well Lived

September 27th 1929 - September 29th 2025

It is with heavy hearts and deep sorrow that we announce the passing of my beloved mother, Lois Isabelle Nelson. She left us peacefully, surrounded by family and love, with her son Peter and granddaughter Leena at her side, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, warmth, and unwavering strength.

My mother was born in Canada, where she grew up embracing the values of community, compassion, and respect for all. Throughout her life, she exemplified these virtues in everything she did. Whether she was volunteering in her neighbourhood, or spending many years volunteering her time and cooking skills at church for fundraising. Her meat pies will be forever remembered for the hundred's of people that were lucky enough to eat them over the years. Lois always was offering a helping hand to friends, or nurturing her family through both joyful and challenging times.

She was a devoted mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, whose greatest joy was spending time with loved ones. Her home was always filled with warmth, laughter, and the comforting aroma of her wonderful home-cooked meals. She taught us the importance of kindness, hard work, and integrity, shaping the lives of all who knew her. Her years working in the courts dealing with and supporting families in turmoil only furthered her value of family.

The passing of her beloved husband Glenn was a difficult time, but Lois stayed strong, cherishing the many years they spent camping and braving the occasional boat ride that terrified her. Camping may not have been her favourite activity, but she never complained—family always came first. Glenn could be a challenge at times, and Mom often found herself in the middle, gently helping to keep the peace. She was our quiet negotiator.

She will be dearly missed by her son Peter, grandchildren Leena and Colin, extended family, and countless friends who were touched by her generosity and her gentle spirit. We will always remember her for her wise words, infectious laughter, and the unconditional love she shared every day.

A service to celebrate her life will be arranged in the near future in honouring her memory and sharing stories that reflect the beautiful life she lived.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Greater Niagara General Hospital in her memory, reflecting her lifelong commitment to helping others. GNGH staff were exceptional in their caring and support and I have nothing but great things to say about them. Thank you in this time of need. Also to all the kind souls at Chippawa Creek Care Residence who took the time to befriend my mother and give her the excellent care she deserved. All your work and friendship is forever appreciated.

We find comfort knowing that she is at peace, reunited with loved ones who have gone before her. Her memory will remain forever in our hearts. Rest gently, Mum. You will be missed, but never forgotten.

Sad to hear of the passing of Aunt Lois. My first memory of her was as a child how she comforted me sweetly when I saw a spider creep under my bed. She was a lovely woman. May kind memories ease the loss of loved ones.

In loving memory ...
I/we pledge to make a memorial donation.

Peter – I don’t know if you will remember my family but my Dad, Allan Akrigg, worked with your Dad at the paper for years. They also hunted together. Over the years our mothers became friends as well. Lois & Glenn were guests at my wedding and I remember them both fondly.
In time, memories will overtake the sadness you feel at your Mom’s passing
Take care, Karen (Akrigg) Gillis
