In Loving Memory of
Margaret Rose Tilbert
1939 ~ 2025
Obituary of Margaret Rose Tilbert
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Margaret Rose Tilbert on December 8, 2025, at the age of 86. Margaret is survived by her beloved husband Joachim (Joe) Hinzer, her three children Roberta, Maureen and Robert Chamberlain, 6 grandchildren and 1 great- grandchild. She is survived by three sisters, Maleka Dittrick, Diana Tilburt and Joyce Tilburt, as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. Margaret is also remembered by a large second family of fellow teachers, genealogy researchers and close friends around the world.Margaret was born in Beresford, NB, grew up bilingual and finished high school in Bathurst. She was extremely proud of her Acadian heritage (on her mother's side), tracing her roots back to the "King's Daughter's" brought to Canada (1663-1673) by Louis XIV of France. Shortly after moving to Ontario, she was asked to teach French in 1969 and, over time, completed the required university courses and graduated, earning her bachelor's degree and BEd.
She raised a family of three children and also found time to explore various interests such as patchwork, folklore, folk dance, music, and beekeeping. She spent several summers in Europe, following language and culture immersion programs in Germany, Austria, France, Switzerland and Burkina Faso in Africa.
Having lived in Africa for 8 summers and a school year (on teaching leave) to live with her second husband, she worked as a substitute teacher and taught different subjects at the International School of Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire. During her visits, she participated in the construction of a village hospital in Tankesse, involving all her students at St Alexander's Catholic Elementary School (Fonthill) as part of the annual Valentine's Day fundraiser.
Retiring after more than 25 years of teaching with the Welland County Separate School Board, Margaret then taught English as a Second Language in China. Delighted with their respect for teachers, she completed more than 30 assignments and befriended many Chinese people wherever she taught. Most recently, in 2019, she was invited to teach the teachers' children at a summer school at Shanghai JiaTong University.
Through her husband’s business interests in China, Margaret visited many of the more distant provinces, seeing the Terracotta Warriers in Xian, the Pandas in Chengdou, Fire Mountain in Xinjian and Inner Mongolia and participating in their cultural celebrations. Other travels included Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, Australia and New Zealand.
Margaret was very proud to pay tribute to her parents, the community she grew up in, and all those close to her. She made many quilts, both for members of her family and for organizations she supported. She established a scholarship in honour of her parents at the Université de Moncton for students in education, science and environment and was awarded the title of
"Companion" of the Order of Regents in 2018.
In recent years, Margaret has been diagnosed with an atypical form of Parkinson's disease, yet despite the inevitable decline in function that accompanies the progression of this disease, Margaret's courage, perseverance and determination have never wavered in the pursuit of her goals and dreams. More recently, and to continue her philanthropy, in 2022, she purchased and renovated a century-old stately home named after her mother, "Jardin d'Elodie" in the city of Bathurst, with the goal of providing a residence for independent women who want to live in community with like-minded people and enjoy the benefits of community living while enjoying their own private space. Since this summer, the six-bedroom house has been fully occupied.
Margaret's spirit and zest for life animated her life and her life plans. She enlivened the lives of many people she met and we, who had the privilege of her friendship, are grateful for the joy she brought into our lives.
Dear Margaret, it is your turn to rest in peace after a life of kindness.
In accordance with Margaret's wishes, cremation has taken place and a celebration of life will be held in the spring of 2026. Arrangements were entrusted to Essentials Cremation and Burial Services. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the UHN Foundation, the Sinai Health Foundation, the Canadian Cancer Society, or by planting a tree.
Online condolences can be shared on Margaret's tribute page found at EssentialsNiagara.com.

I am so sorry to hear about Margaret passing away. She was a great friend and I enjoyed her companionship for many years.
I felt a deep affliction upon learning of the passing of Margaret Tilbert.
My heartfelt condolences go to her husband, Joe Hinzer; her children and grandchildren; and her sisters, Diana Tilburt, Joyce Tilburt, and Maleka Dittrick.
Margaret was a truly remarkable woman—intellectual, cultivated, fashionable, and profoundly accomplished. Her love for the arts was exceptional. She attained art festivals to share and exchange creative visions. With keen eyes and steady hands, she skillfully guided needle and thread to transform fabrics from diverse traditional cultures into warm, brilliant, and beautiful garments. Rooted in her North American heritage, she gracefully and fashionably embraced many cultures, including Chinese, West African, and other traditions.
Listening to her and contemplating her smile always inspired passion, creativity, and productivity in interlocutors. Wherever paths crossed, her presence left a lasting impression.
One echo I received along my own journey captures from other colleagues her essence perfectly: “I am very sorry to learn that she has passed away. I remember her very well from our days in Cote d’Ivoire. She was very nice and kind.”
Margaret, after a life filled with hope, love, sharing, entrepreneurship, and a rich multiplicity of visions under our Lord Jesus Christ, it is now your time to rest in peace. From where you are, may love, joy and peace surround you. In your resting place, please allow more than a hundred Margarets to rise and uplift your candle for generations to come.
With deep respect and remembrance

My heart was saddened to hear of Marg’s passing. She was a truly gracious woman. Joy would spring into my heart when I saw her in the hallways of the church. Gentle, kind and always catering joy. The world would be a better place with more people like her in it. My prays go out to her family. You were fortunate to have her. You are fortunate to have her spirit within you forever.
