After teaching for 30 years with Niagara South Board of Education, Lorne took an early retirement to enjoy his happy place on McQuaby Lake. He was an avid swimmer, beautiful craftsmen, enthusiastic puzzler and lover of sunsets. Lorne loved to share the “power of the island” with all who would visit.
Lorne often told us that “I lived a great life with no regrets” (except for his Toronto Maple Leafs not winning the Stanley Cup).
In keeping with Lorne’s wishes, cremation has taken place and a celebration of his life will be at his happy place on McQuaby lake this summer.
Cremation has been entrusted with Essentials Cremation and Burial Services. A special thank you to Kayleigh Peterson for her compassion and care through this extremely difficult time.
In lieu of flowers, Lorne would appreciate donations to Jumpstart. Lorne always believed that all children should have the opportunity to play sports. For donations to be kept locally in Niagara, please make a note on the donation page asking for a Niagara Chapter Donation.

What sad news to hear of Lorne’s passing. For over 30 years, we enjoyed our visits with Lorne on his deck overlooking our wonderful Lake McQuaby. Lorne was a great narrator and through him we got to know the world as it was for him growing up in the 1930 and 40s in Southern Ontario. And, of course, there was the lovely Gail, living her dream in her cottage in the woods…and her amazing butter tarts! Wonderful memories. They will both be missed.
I miss you every day dad.
You were my constant,
my confidant and all around best dad I could have ever asked for. Thank you for the memories and best life.
See you on the other side. Xoxo
Sorry to hear of Lorne’s passing. He will be missed at McQuaby Lake.
Sending love and prayers to all!
So sorry to hear of Lorne’s passing, He was a remarkable man!!
Deepest condolences to the family. Mr. Cowan was my grade 7 teacher and vice principal also at the time at Princess Margaret School. He was a great teacher.
After graduating from Hamilton Teachers College many years ago I was lucky to get the position of Art teacher at Princess Elizabeth Senior Public School and even more fortunate to get to know Lorne who also taught there. He passed on many great suggestions to me, a young, first year teacher, that helped me develop further. He was liked and respected by the entire staff and, more importantly, by the students. I left teaching after two years to attend the Ontario College of Art, but over the years and from different cities, Lorne and I would have phone chats to keep in touch. Lorne was an excellent teacher, probably because he was an intelligent, knowledgable, friendly and great to get to know human. My thoughts and good memories are with you, Lorne. Condolences to your family.
I remember Mr. Cowan as my teacher at Stamford. He was firm, but fair.
My condolences to my dear friend, Anne, and the family. He did live a good and, blessed life. May your grief be short and your memories long.
I have the utmost respect for Lorne and will miss him dearly
My heart goes out to the family
