Obituary of John Surgeoner

John passed away in peace while in the presence of family on March 25, 2021, at the age of 74. Preceded in death by his wife Linda (2013). Loving father of Jay and Justin (Christine). Dear brother of Bill in California and Ron of Niagara Falls. Further survived by nieces, nephews, and many relatives throughout Canada and the United States. Born in St. Davids and an entrepreneur at heart, John operated St. Davids Auto Services Station for 30 years receiving the highest awards of excellence from Petro-Canada. John maintained a lifelong commitment to volunteerism serving 40 years as a firefighter, rising to the rank of Chief with Niagara District #2 and as a member of the St. Davids Lions Club. After his retirement, John and Linda moved to their cottage on Lake-of-Bays where they spent summers hosting family & friends. They would spend winters in Venice, Florida enjoying new-found friendships, NASCAR races, and of course his Buffalo Bills. A special thank you to the staff at Huntsville District Memorial Hospital and Hotel Dieu Shaver in St. Catharines. At John’s request cremation has taken place and arrangements have been entrusted with Essentials Cremation and Burial Services. A Celebration of Life will follow at a later date. In lieu of flowers and gifts, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society. Online condolences may be shared on John’s tribute page found at EssentialsNiagara.com.

We are very sad to hear that John has passed away. We’ve been looking back to all those times he helped us out with a troublesome car. You always felt good after a visit with John and Linda at the service station. Service with a BIG SMILE always.

Deepest sympathy. Your Dad was a super guy. Always smiling. My Dad Don Slingerland thought so too. My mom Ginny Slingerland also sends her deepest sympathy. So many great times at the Firehall and Lions dinners. Take care. Nancy (Slingerland) Diamond

Jay, Justin & Family. I’m sorry for your loss. I am grateful for having the privilege of working with him and the friendship that followed. He was a great listener and always had a calming effect on the people around him. His voice of wisdom and sense of humour will never be forgotten. Wishing you the best during this difficult time.

Dear Jay and Justin,
We are deeply saddened to learn of your enormous loss. We have many fond memories of your Dad in his unofficial role as “Mayor of St. Davids” from his “post” at the main intersection of town. He knew everyone and everything and he was always ready to lend a hand in his kind, generous and ever-cheerful manner. We have missed his presence here in the village these past several years and were sorry to learn of his recent health challenges. He will be truly missed by all of us who knew and loved him. Please know that we are holding you both close during this difficult time and we send you our deepest sympathy.
May your beloved Dad now Rest In Peace.
Rick and Barbara Rigby.

He was a nice guy who will be missed by many. I fondly remember the first visit at the bay, Johnny had to have Brian and I come to cut a tree, it took 10 minutes to cut the tree and three days to get over the hangover, those where the good old days, rest easy my friend.

Justin and family I’m very sorry for your loss. I hadn’t seen your Dad in many years but always have fond memories of him. Here’s a few: Petro Canada was my first job with a uniform, it was always impressive to watch John bounce from customer to customer while being his cheery and funny self. He knew how to work a room, I mean pumps. 🙂

I was there when you took possession of the cottage and gutted it! (Circa 1994/93?), And was there when a certain someone’s hair caught on fire. That was one of the largest “controlled” fires I have ever seen.

Once again Justin, my sincerest condolences. RIP John
