Obituary of John “Jerry” McDougall
With heavy hearts we announce thepassing of Jerry on Tuesday, November 29, 2022 at his home surrounded by hisfamily. He leaves behind his doting wife of almost 65 years Anna and their children Mark (Judy) and Teraze. He will be fondly missed by his many nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends.Jerry moved by train, from Nova Scotia to Welland at the young age of 15 to find work. He had the rare opportunity to tryout for the position of Goalie for the Toronto Maple Leafs. Jerry chose an apprenticeship at Page-Hersey/Stelco and a stable job over playing for the NHL and never looked back, retiring 40 years later. He still had his love for hockey and would go on to coach many NHL players in the Welland Minor Hockey League. When he wasn’t busy at work, you could always find him volunteering at the YMCA, Meals on Wheels or even just helping out those who needed the help. He would be the one to give you the shirt off his back.
Thanks to all our neighbors and friends for all their help and kindness through this tough time. Also to Dr. Grant for looking after our husband and father. A special thank you to his niece Anne (Stuart) Oxenham for all your love and many phone calls. A big thank you aswell to Jenny, Sandi, and special nurses Kim and Minolo for all your care, loveand compassion. In accordance with Jerry’s wishes, cremation has taken place and a private family Funeral will take place at a later date. Arrangements are entrusted to Essentials Cremation and Burial Services. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of your choice.

I have just found out Gerry has passed away. I am saddened by the news. He was my goaltending coach for many years with the Welland cougars. We had so many good times together and wish I had known sooner. He was one of the nicest man I ever knew. I have many good stories that we shared. Not to mention Gerry and I won several 50-50 draws at hockey games over the years which we both kept quiet lol. I am sure he will be playing goal in heaven. I will miss him. REST IN PEACE GERRY.

My father, Tom Bell, was a good friend of Mr. McDougall’s, we very recently lost him as well. He often spoke highly of Jerry. I believe they played and coached hockey together back in the day. I wanted to pass on my deepest condolences to his family.!
My deepest condolences to all of Jerry’s family and friends. As a young reporter, one of my first assignments was to cover Welland’s junior B hockey team, no small task at the time. From day one, Jerry was a friendly, smiling face and we spent countless Sunday nights in the press box or on the road talking and laughing always trying to win the 50/50 draw. He was a wonderful companion and just an overall nice. RIP Jerry.
To Mark, Judy and Family. Our condolences on your loss, please know you are in our prayers.

I wish to extend my sincere condolences to Jerry’s wife and family. Through hockey I became a close friend of Jerry’s and took many roadtrips together to look at players who might eventually play for Welland and beyond. Jerry was great company and had many stories of his life growing up in Nova Scotia where he began his hockey career. Jerry also spoke so proudly of his family.
My friend you were loved by all and will be missed by many. Till we meet again.
