Obituary of John "Ian" Fielding

It is with great sadness that our family announces the sudden passing of Ian on Saturday, November 13, 2021, at the age of 79. He was a beloved and devoted husband for 56 years to Elizabeth (Elspeth). A loving father of Elayn Fielding-Young and Jennifer (Joey) Della Marina. Proud grandfather of Bradley (Ally) Adams, Sofia, Marcello and Lucca Della Marina. He was predeceased by his parents Andrew and Mary Fielding. Ian will be greatly missed by his extended family in Scotland and by many friends around the globe.

With an artistic and knowledgeable mind, Ian dedicated many years to his profession as a Naval Architect. He was also a long-time member of the Masonic Lodge and the Niagara Shrine Club. Volunteering his time and being part of his community gave him much joy and fulfillment.

Ian’s favourite pastimes included travelling the world, hitting a golf ball down the fairway, and savouring a glass of Scotch. Above all, he always felt that the greatest moments of his life were spent with his family and friends.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the first responders and to the Greater Niagara General Hospital’s ER team, for their care and support.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted with Essentials Cremation and Burial Services (905-354-2133). In accordance with Ian’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A visitation and a Celebration of Ian’s Life will be held at the St. Catharines Golf and Country Club, 70 Westchester Ave, St. Catharines, on Wednesday, November 17th from 1-4pm, with the memorial service taking place at 2pm. If you are not able to attend on Wednesday, friends also have an opportunity to join the family on Tuesday, November 16th from 7-9pm at Essentials, 4300 Drummond Road, Niagara Falls. Proof of double vaccination is required to attend services at both locations and covid protocols will be followed. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to the Niagara Shrine Club. Online condolences may be shared on Ian’s tribute page found at EssentialsNiagara.com.

Essentials Cremation and Burial Services is inviting you to a scheduled Zoom conference.

My heart goes out to Elspeth and her family
I worked with Ian back in the 70s when we had good shipyards in Canada
Lots of laughs and hard work in the day
Watched as his career flourished as he took on more responsibility and bigger challenges
A Shipbuilder through and through
Now that he is gone to another dimension we will all miss him, as he resides in the Great Drydock in the Sky
