Obituary of John Digby

John passed away peacefully with family by his side on July 24, 2024 at the age of 76. He was the beloved husband of 50 wonderful years to Anne. Loving father of Alan (Ghislaine) and Chevonn (Chris) Cook. Proud grandpa to Bodie, Kate and Toni. John will also be fondly remembered by his sister Linda (Tony) Tamburri, brother-in-law Eldon (Kathy) Murdock and nephews Jesse and Daniel (Carolina) Tamburri.

John dedicated his career to the City of Niagara Falls as a Heavy Equipment Operator for 30 years. In addition to his work with the city, John also owned and operated his own sewing machine repair business. His commitment to his craft was unwavering, and he continued to provide repairs as long as he was able. John had a passion for the outdoors and gardening. He could often be found in the backyard wearing his trademark Tilley hat and tending to his gardens, which he meticulously cared for. After a hard day of gardening and yard work, there was nothing he enjoyed more than a cold beer, a simple pleasure that brought him joy.

John will be remembered for his friendly and charismatic nature. Once referred to as "one of the last great gentlemen," John was kind, considerate, and always ready with a smile on his face. He had an incredible ability to make friends wherever he went and was affectionately known as the "Candy Man" for his habit of always having candy ready for anyone he met.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the PSWs, doctors, and nurses who supported John and the family during his final months. Their care and compassion were deeply appreciated.

In keeping with John's wishes, cremation has taken place. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date. If desired, memorial donations may be made to the Niagara Peninsula Conservation Foundation.

So sorry to hear of your loss. I sat beside John in Grade 6 at Greendale Public school. I am so happy to hear what a success John made of his life. Nothing more important than kindness and a happy marriage. I really liked John even though he seemed troubled in those days. I remember him coming back to his seat after getting the strap from Mr. Embleton. He was visibly upset so I asked him if everything was okay. He leaned over and whispered,
“If that Embleton gives me the strap again, I’m going to punch him right in the nose!” I don’t think he ever did.
