Obituary of Jean Young Ewing Graham

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Jean, who left us peacefully in the early hours of Sunday, September 15, 2024, at the Greater Niagara General Hospital. She was 85 years of age. Jean was predeceased by her husband, Glenn Graham 1996. A devoted mother, Jean’s self-reliance and resilience were central to everything she did. As a single mom, she worked tirelessly to ensure a wonderful life for her two sons, Douglas & Maggie Fleming and Jason & Aneta Fleming. She was a proud and loving grandmother to Troy and Alexander. As a Grandma, she was always involved, whether through holiday traditions like dressing up and helping to hand out Halloween candy or simply offering her love and support. Jean has also been reunited with her special friend, John Genders.

Born in Scotland, Jean was the only child of James and Anne Kilpatrick. She carried her Scottish roots with her throughout her life. Her years in Canada was marked by her deep commitment to community, which included volunteering at the hospital in the palliative care unit, being an active member of the Lions Club, and dedicating her time to Grace Gospel Church. She was honoured to receive the Volunteer of the Year Award from the City of Niagara Falls, an accolade that meant the world to her.

Her greatest passion was for music—particularly Gospel, classical, and country western, which shone brightly in everything she did. Jean’s powerful voice was a gift she shared with the Niagara Region as she sang with the prestigious Chapel Singers Gospel choir and participated in many competitions. Her friends and colleagues may recall Jean’s presence as she enjoyed a long and fulfilling career with Canada Post, where she proudly served as the Post Master of the Queenston Post Office, a role that brought her great pride and joy.

In accordance with Jean’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A gathering to celebrate her life will be held at Essentials Cremation and Burial Services, 4300 Drummond Road, Niagara Falls, on Thursday, September 26, 2024, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Interment will take place in Grand Valley at a later date. Memorial donations in Jean’s memory may be made to Diabetes Canada.

Jean was a wonderful person who brought joy and laughter everywhere she went. A great Mom to Doug and Jason. A loving wife to my cousin Glenn — and then a memorable addition to the extended Graham clan. The only person who ever called me Herkie. What a beautiful voice. Loudest cheerer at hockey games. Will miss her exuberance – and hugs.
Love,
Randy “Herc” Boswell

Our heartfelt sympathy for Jean’s family. We knew her through her position at Queenston Post Office. She was always pleasant, welcomed in everyone, including children, and was cheerfully helpful. Jean had an infectious laugh.
It was interesting to hear her stories of the Glasgow area and the bombings during WW2 as my in laws were from the same area.
One thing that I believe is that Jean found something to smile about each and every day and I’m quite certain she regaling others with her stories, great sense of humour, and is singing with the choirs in Heaven.
