Obituary of Norma Jacqueline (Jackie) Burton
Passed away peacefully with her family by her side on June 29, 2024, just days shy of her 100th birthday. Jackie is now reunited with her beloved husband Robert (1989) and cherished daughter Brenda West (2015).Jackie was the loving mother of Darryl (Carolyn) and mother-in-law to Rick West (Joanne). She was a devoted Nana to Danna (Brian) Charland, Jillian (Mike) Thompson, Jeffrey (Lindsey) Burton, Erica (Dustin) Davidson, and Joseph (Melissa) Burton. She was also a proud great-grandmother to Kimberly, Tyler, Daniel, Brandon, Reegan, Tyson, Emmett, and Aubree. Jackie was a much-loved aunt to her nephew Ron (Margie), her niece Joannie (the late Marty) and her niece & coffee buddy Marion as well as many other nieces & nephews. Born the youngest of 13 children to Emmerson and Ellen Hannigan, Jackie was predeceased by all of her siblings.
Jackie owned her own hairdressing salon in St. Catharines for many years. She took immense pride in her work, whether she was serving her loyal customers or cutting her own grandchildren's hair. She was a long-time member of St. George's Anglican Church. Jackie enjoyed any time spent with her family, especially trips to the family cottage in Parry Sound, where so many memories were made over the years.
Jackie had a zest for life, demonstrated by her enthusiasm and energy in her later years. She remained active well into her 90s, enjoying roller-skating and bowling and actively participating in her weekly bowling league at the Fairview Mall. She spent many joyful years living in the Kiwanis apartments, where she formed many friendships and enjoyed daily meet-ups and social gatherings for coffee and lunch. Jackie will be remembered for her strong-willed nature and for her love of family, especially her grandchildren. She will be truly missed.
Special thanks to the staff at Willoughby Manor for their support. Also, the family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to Lou-Anne Rochat and the dedicated staff at Oakwood Park Lodge, where Jackie spent the last five months of her life. The loving care and compassion provided by the Oakwood Park Lodge Family was truly exceptional.
In keeping with Jackie's wishes, cremation has taken place. A celebration of Jackie's remarkable life will be held privately for family. If desired, memorial donations may be made to a charity of your choice.

To Jackie’s family,,
I met Jackie not long after she sold her home and moved into a third floor apartment.
Jackie and myself were very close friends and rollerskating buddies for about 30 years, give or take. I live in Waterdown and would pick Jackie up on my way to any rink we skated at in the greater Buffalo area and Jackie would drive to the Hamilton and Burlington before all our rinks closed down. We had lots of fun and sadnesses too., as when Brenda unexpectedly passed away.
I kept in touch with Jackie after she stopped skating and until she was going on to 97, then with health problems of my own, lost touch although I have thought of her continually since then. My sincere condolences to all of Jackie’s family. I recognize many names of the relatives named in this obituary that Jackie had mentioned over the years of our skating nights, is as if I knew most of you. Jackie was a wonderful woman and best friend…the very best in my opinion. You all were very fortunate
Dear Daryl, Carolyn & Family, We are saddened to hear of the loss of your mom, grandmom & great grandmom. I have known her since I was a child. She was always kind ,soft spoken, neat, organized, compassionate & wise. When Brenda outgrew me as she entered high school, she said maybe one day you will be friends again. You have just parted ways temporarily. That somehow comforted me. Brenda and I never became close friends yet we seemed to still connect whenever we met up in the years that followed. Although your mom was almost 100, life is never long enough. Their is still a personal loss and a grieving journey ahead for you all. There is the comfort of her now being with your dad and Brenda. In her own words of wisdom, “You have just parted ways temporarily.” All she taught you as she lived her life is within each one of you. You are her living parts that continue to carry her legacy through the generations. I pray that God will comfort you through the loving hands and hearts that surround you at this time. Our Heartfelt Condolences to you all. Patricia Mumby & Family
