Obituary of Jack Slater

Jack Slater, born and raised in Niagara Falls, a cherished father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully in his 93rd year. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 54 years, Joan, who passed away in 2008. Jack is lovingly remembered by his children: Richard (Cheryl), Brian (Laurie), Lori (Tim), and Glenda (Paul); his 11 grandchildren; and his 10 great-grandchildren.

Jack had a "proud and distinguished" career as a respected officer with the Niagara Parks Police Service, serving with dedication for over 30 years. His adventurous spirit was evident in his love for travel and spontaneous road trips. For many years, Joan and Jack enjoyed a second home in Florida and spent their retirement sailing together on Lake Ontario from Port Dalhousie.

In keeping with Jack’s wishes, cremation has taken place and arrangements are entrusted to Essentials Cremation and Burial Services. Friends and family are invited to a visitation at Essentials located at 4300 Drummond Rd. Niagara Falls, on Wednesday, August 14, from 6 PM to 8 PM. A memorial inurnment will follow on Thursday, August 15, at 11 AM at Fairview Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes donations to the Canadian Cancer Society in Jack’s name, celebrating the enduring memory of both Jack and Joan.

A bit late but just heard about Jack’s passing. Many fun memories popped into my head. Jack and my husband Ian worked on the same shift for many years. We became close friends and had yearly spaghetti and partridge feeds. Jack and Ian had yearly spring trout fishing and fall partridge hunting trips.
Jack was unique in many ways and could “fix” anything. Jack taught us many new card games. When they came up in the summer after their time in Florida there would many new card games. “Tiles” one year. Jack loved cards. If the table was set for dinner too early he would clear it saying we can play a couple games. Memories can go on and on, all of them great.
Our condolences to all of you- Laurie, Rick, Brian and Glenda.

I would like to convey my sincere condolences to the Slater family. Friends and brothers and sisters in blue..
I worked with the Parks police
from 81 – 84 and to this day I have many fond memories.
Jacks laugh. Quick wit and sense of humour and oh, the ball tourneys I will remember most.
Best job ever.

We will miss you Jack. A dear friend of our family. A dear friend to my late Mother. You always knew the answers to all the crosswords. Jack could put a puzzle together in no time. He was a food connoisseur and attended many family dinners. Rest in heaven Jack. Love Robert & Donna Soyka, Linda & Gary Patterson and Kelly Blanchfield. Our condolences to the Slater family.

Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Jack Slater during this difficult time. As mentioned, Jack was a respected and loved member of the Niagara Parks Police Service who retired as a Sergeant some time ago. Jack is remembered by our Service as a gentle and resilient man and a patient supervisor. Jack is regarded as legendary for his great sense of humour. He is also someone known for the love he had for his family and for his dedication towards protecting Niagara Parks and its millions of annual visitors.

A tremendous ambassador who will be missed.

On behalf of the NPPS, thank you for your service and rest in peace Jack.
