Obituary of Glen Joseph Doherty

Glen Joseph Doherty, a devoted father, loving grandfather, and faithful friend, passed away peacefully at home in his 90th year with his daughters and sister Barb by his side on August 16, reunited with his beloved wife, Gert, and son, John. Glen's departure leaves a void in our hearts, but his legacy of strength and love will forever guide us.

Glen is survived by his children: Teena (Frank), Nancy (Marcel), and Karen (Julio), and his cherished grandchildren: Glen (Tonia), Nicole (Mark), Anthony (Stephanie), Christopher (Mayu), Levis, Melissa (Joseph), and Kimberley (Justin). His unwavering love extended to great-grandchildren: Yanick, Medrick, Jessa, Hayden, Valentino, Andreas, Joseph, and Baby V. Glen was a devoted brother to Velma, Barbara (Chris), and Jim. Glen is predeceased by his parents Mary & Patrick, and his brothers Alfred, Hugh and Paddy. Caring brother-in-law to Denise (Brian), Rene (Eloise), Ben (Sue), and Mary (Frank).

Glen's faith was his guiding light, evident through his lifelong membership in the Knights of Columbus. His commitment to faith and community set an inspiring example. Professionally, Glen retired from Ontario Paper Company in 1990, leaving a lasting impact on his industry. In retirement, Glen and Gert became snowbirds and loved to travel. A special thanks to all those who helped with his palliative care.

In accordance with Glen’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life will be held on Wednesday, August 23, at 11 am, at Our Lady of Peace Church, 6988 Stanley Ave, Niagara Falls, ON L2G 7B7. Donations may be made to The Kidney Foundation in Glen’s honour. Arrangements are entrusted with Essentials Cremation and Burial Services.

I first met Glen at my wedding to his brother Jim. It was apparent then that he was a gifted speaker and loving brother. When Jim and I moved to the Falls we coined the phrase “the beer fairy” as his frequent trips with Gert across the river usually ended with putting a case of beer at our patio. Glen always saw a silver lining in everything and his charm and smile made everyone in his presence feel special. I never witnessed him have a bad day because he was always positive. He was a great storyteller with a premium Dad joke woven in for your enjoyment. Our family game nights taught his autistic nephews the joy of a good or sneaky move, filled with laughter, forgetting their often sore loser attitudes. Glen brought out the best in people. Thoughts and prayers to family and friends as they celebrate the life of this extraordinary man.

To Glen’s family my deepest sympathies. He was a very kind and friendly neighbour in our building. It was an honour to know Glen and his late wife Gert. They were a lovely couple!
