Obituary of Gerry (Gerhardt) Mittag

May 3, 1925 – September 15, 2021

Immigrating to Canada in 1954 from East Germany with his wife Erika and young daughter Carola provided for one of Gerry’s happiest times. In his own words “I was never so happy as the day my feet touched Canadian soil”. There was never a prouder moment than when he became a Canadian citizen. A few years later the rest of his family, his parents, his brothers Bruce (Lilo) and Lutz (Hildegard) and his sister Ortrud (Heinz) followed, made possible by Gerry’s commitment to his family being together again.

Gerry lived his life in service to his family, a testament to the man he will be remembered for. He was proud of his two grandsons Quentin and Tobias, and his great grandsons Noah, Fritz and Hudson and great granddaughter Michaela. Nieces and nephews, big and small, knew him as Onkel Gerhardt and loved him for his values, the example he set, and the mischievous, fun-loving and kind man he was with an infinite love for life.

Gerry enjoyed a life well-lived and well-loved. “All ninety-six years were filled with so much life & love” Stefannie Hock (granddaughter-in-law); “My inspiration, my mentor, my drinking partner, my godfather, my Onkel Gerhardt. Love you so much…” Olaf Brandt (nephew).

They say it takes a minute to find special people, an hour to appreciate them, a day to love them, and a lifetime to forget them. Gerry will never be forgotten by all who knew and loved him.

Gerry chose to be cremated. His ashes will be reunited with those of his beloved wife at a later date. An invitation to a celebration of Gerry’s life will be forthcoming.

The family thanks anyone who would like to remember Gerry through donations, either to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, or Dreamers Dog Sanctuary, 672 Hwy 20 W., Fenwick ON L0S 1CO, [email protected] This would honour his love for animals.
