Obituary of Gary Robert Bowerman
Bowerman, Gary R.
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Gary Bowerman on Wednesday, April 1, 2020. Gary passed away with the presence of the Lord around him at Woodlands of Sunset with his wife Carol and Chaplain Marcie by his side reading Psalm 23 and praying. Gary is now “safe in the arms of Jesus”. Beloved husband of Carol Anne (nee Sutherland) for 52 years. Loved and devoted dad of Jason Bowerman and Becky Bowerman (Matt Cosby). Proud poppy to Christian Bowerman (Mr. C) and Jorja Bowerman. Cherished brother of Linda and her husband Len Fabinao, who were Carol’s rocks during this time. Gary will be fondly remembered by a number of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. Predeceased by his parents Harold and Beatrice Bowerman. His family and those who loved him will miss him.
Gary worked at John Deere for 30 years, retiring one year before it closed. He loved hunting with his buddies at Sac Bay Lodge, Manitoba for many years. Gary had a passion and love for animals, whether it was a stray cat that found its way into our garage, to the neighbour’s ducks who would waddle their way to our backyard when they heard his truck pull into our driveway. He loved every one of the many cats and dogs that found their forever home with him. Gary loved the outdoors and walking the Friendship Trail with Carol and the Grandkids, often with one of the stray cats tagging along. He was a quiet, soft spoken man who worked hard for his family, always encouraging us to “save for retirement”. Gary loved his Sherkston neighbourhood and volunteered at the community centre, even playing Santa Claus one year, surprising the family. He gave time to the Open Arms Mission as a truck driver, picking up donations of food.
Unfortunately, Gary was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease in 2011. We walked that journey together “one day at a time” with the help and advice of Len and Linda walking it with us. The support group of Northland Pointe Adult Day Care Program helped Gary maintain his dignity and gave him purpose in life. He often referenced going to the program saying, “I’m going to work”. With the love and prayer support of our church family and friends, our faith grew, and we learned to “walk one day at a time” trusting that in the midst of difficult days, God was right beside us walking with us and loving us.
The family would like to thank all the staff at Woodlands of Sunset (Cedars) for the heartfelt compassion they gave to Gary during his time there. All of you, whether you were nursing, PSW, recreation, housekeeping, dietary or laundry - thank you for your dedication. Heather, my friend, you stayed with Gary and told him to hold on until I came, telling him that “Carol Loves you” – thank you so much. Kristen in recreation, thank you for your love for your job and for your “residence friends”. (I am sure that your Friend Gary would agree).
Essentials Cremation and Burial Services has been entrusted with arrangements. As per Gary’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A service for Gary’s homegoing will be held at a later date. Donations may be made to Golden Harvest Baptist Church Building Fund or the SPCA. Online condolences may be shared on Gary’s tribute page at EssentialsNiagara.com
