Obituary of Gail Margaret Cavanagh

Passed away peacefully with her family by her side on December 24, 2023 at the age of 82. Beloved wife of the late Harold Cavanagh. Gail was a devoted mother to Brian, Beverley and Eric. Cherished Nana to Aleasha (Sean) and Andie, Alex and Veronica and proud great-Nana to Jack. Gail will be sorely missed by her granddog Misu, whom she adored. Fondly remembered by her sister-in-law Willa McShane; daughter-in-law Vivian; nieces Laura McShane, Joanne Garrison, Kathy Traynor, Linda Groocock, Shari Noell; nephews Sean Traynor, Barry Traynor, Jimmy Traynor, the late Timmy Traynor, the late Brian Traynor, Andy Noell, James Noell, and David Groocock . Predeceased by her parents William and Phyllis McShane, and brothers Bill & Bruce McShane.

Gail was the embodiment of love, generosity, and kindness. Fondly remembered as everyone's mother, her door was always open, and her home was a gathering place for family and friends. Gail was a devoted fan of baseball and absolutely loved the New York Yankees. Beyond sports, Gail found joy in a variety of activities that showcased her vibrant spirit. She had a passion for curling, cribbage, and card games. Gail's love extended beyond humans; she was a huge animal lover and took great pleasure in cozying up in her chair with her granddog Misu.

Known for her boundless capacity for love, Gail dedicated her time to altruistic endeavors that touched many lives. Over the years she knit many hats and gloves for premature babies, which she donated to hospitals. Her generosity extended to all aspects of her life, as she always sought ways to give to others. Gail's commitment to making a positive impact was evident in her many years as a coach in the Special Olympics. Gail will be remembered for her love of gardening & her backyard oasis, as well as her baking skills (especially her chocolate chip cookies!). She leaves behind a legacy of selflessness and compassion, and she will be forever missed by those who knew her.

The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to the staff at the Greater Niagara General Hospital, especially Daniella, Ty and Dr. Hussain for the phenomenal level of care provided to Gail on her final day.

In keeping with Gail's wishes, cremation has taken place. A visitation will be held on Saturday, January 6 from 12-2 p.m. at Essentials Cremation and Burial Services, 102A-4300 Drummond Road, Niagara Falls. If desired, memorial donations may be made to the Niagara SPCA and Humane Society.

I am so sorry for your loss. I got to know Gail when she came into the Credit Union. She always showed off her new nail colour, talked about what she had been up to, and once, when Sue and I admired her Remembrance Day bracelet from the Legion, she said she would go get us one. Every time I wear it, I will think of her fondly.

Mama: I miss you so much. I know you always said I could do anything, I guess you really meant it but this is so very hard without you by my side. I love you with my whole heart and even though it feels broken you are the glue that holds it together and will help it heal. I Love You.
