Obituary of Gaetan "Gates" Landry

With heavy hearts and fond memories, we announce the peaceful passing of Gaetan “Gates” Landry on July 2, 2025, at the age of 82.

Gates leaves behind the love of his life and wife of 63 years, Bea (Clermont), with whom he built a life filled with laughter, love, and unforgettable moments. He was a proud and devoted father to David (Kim) and Carole (Rick), and a cherished grandfather to Erica (Olivier), Mike (Allison), Samantha (Ryan), and Nicholas. His great-grandson Liam brought him great joy in his later years, and the sparkle in his eye was never brighter than when he was surrounded by his grandchildren.

Before illness slowed him down, Gates was an incredibly social man—thanks in no small part to Bea, who made sure they never missed a gathering. While she may have been the driving force behind their full calendar, Gates embraced every moment, often becoming the life of the party in his own quiet way. A man of few words, he had a sharp mind and a dry, unforgettable sense of humour whether it was jokes or pranks some of his antics were legendary. He nurtured lifelong friendships that dated back to childhood—bonds that stood the test of time and gave rise to countless stories (some more believable than others). His circle continued to grow through euchre parties, the hunt club, bowling nights, and wood carving sessions—where his quick wit and clever observations made him a favourite companion.

An avid outdoorsman in his younger years, Gates found great joy in fishing and hunting. He was also a master in the kitchen and at the grill, an enthusiastic winemaker, and a master wood carver. But more than anything, Gates loved being with his family. Saturday nights at Pops and Grams’ were legendary—complete with poorly taped movies, bottomless snacks, and all the love a grandchild could ever need. Among his most treasured memories were the epic trips to Algonquin Park—first with “the boys” and, later, with his grandkids in tow. Those adventures became family lore and a symbol of the deep bonds he nurtured across generations.

Gates leaves behind a legacy of love, quiet wisdom, and truly terrible VHS copies of classic movies. He will be missed beyond words and remembered always with a smile.
A heartfelt thank you to the incredible team at Northland Pointe for their compassionate care, and to Dr. Lawrence for his decades of care, guidance, and friendship.

In keeping with his wishes, cremation has taken place and a celebration of Gates’ life will be held at a later date. In the meantime, raise a glass, share a story, and think of him when you're surrounded by friends and family. He wouldn’t want it any other way. Arrangements have been entrusted to Essentials Cremation and Burial Services in Welland.

If desired, donations in Gates’ memory may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Ontario or the Canadian Cancer Society. Online condolences may be shared on his tribute page found at EssentialsNiagara.com.

Bea I was sad to hear of Gates passing . He will be missed , he truly touched my heart . I am so happy I had the pleasure to know him. The “sparkle in his eye “ is exactly what I always said to you , when he would laugh or smile with that sparkle my heart would melt . You were also a pleasure to get to know . Gates adored you and everything was “is that ok with Bea ?” You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers.
