Obituary of Frank Teruo Seko

The Life Story of Frank Teruo Seko

Frank Teruo Seko was born on January 27, 1934, a quiet soul entering a world that would test him early and shape him into the remarkable man he would become. Of Japanese ancestry, Frank spent his childhood under the shadow of one of history’s darkest chapters. Alongside his parents, Yaeko Mary and Kinjiro Michael Seko, and his siblings Richard and Mae and Jeannie, he was forced into a internment camp during the Second World War. Even as a young boy, Frank carried himself with a resilience and dignity that would define his entire life.

When the war ended and the Seko family rebuilt their lives, Frank grew into a man guided by honesty, humility, and hard work. He found his calling under the hood of a car, first as an auto mechanic and later as an Auto Tech Teacher at Port Colborne High School. His students remember him not only for his skill, but for his patience, his steady presence, and the quiet pride he took in helping others learn. After decades of service, Frank retired at the age of 61, leaving behind a legacy of craftsmanship and mentorship.

In November of 1963, Frank married the love of his life, Margaret Kobayashi. Their marriage—62 years strong—was a testament to loyalty, partnership, and unwavering devotion. Together they raised five beautiful daughters: Cindy (Sylvain), Diana (Gary), Gill (Michael), Janice (Jim), and Krystal (Wade). Frank poured his heart into fatherhood, offering his girls not just love, but guidance, humor, and the kind of wisdom that only comes from a life lived with integrity.

As the years passed, Frank’s family grew, and he embraced his role as a grandfather with the same warmth and dedication he had always shown. Brandon (Dorothy), Dylan, Cameron (Karly), Alyssa (Michael), Noah, Grace, Sophia, Justine (Tom), Jade (Alex), John, Juliet (Kevin), Harry, and Juniper were blessed with a grandfather who told the best stories, shared the biggest laughs, and always managed to slip in a lesson or two. To them, he was a source of comfort, strength, and endless affection. He continued his storied legacy as a great grandfather to Emilia, Brynn, Laurel, Kylan, Layla, Landyn, Liliana, Jack and Marcela.

Frank was also deeply rooted in his community. For more than 35 years, he was a proud and respected member of the Optimist Club in Welland, Ontario. His quiet leadership, generosity, and willingness to help anyone in need made him a pillar of the community and a friend to many.

Throughout his 91 years, Frank witnessed an extraordinary sweep of history—from World War II to the Blizzard of ’77 and countless moments in between. He faced every challenge with fairness, modesty, and a deep sense of pride in who he was and where he came from. His life was not loud or boastful; it was steady, honorable, and filled with kindness.

Above all else, Frank was a family man. His greatest joy came from ensuring that those he loved were safe, supported, and cared for. His presence was a comfort, his guidance a gift, and his love a constant that shaped generations.

On January 9, 2026, just shy of his 92nd birthday, Frank passed away peacefully at home with his family by his side. Though he has left this world, the impact he made is immeasurable. He touched more lives than can ever be counted, and his memory will continue to live on in every story told, every lesson remembered, and every act of kindness inspired by his example.

Frank now joins his sister, father, and mother in the afterlife. Those who remain hold onto the hope that they will meet him again someday. Until then, his legacy endures—in his family, in his community, and in the countless hearts he shaped with his gentle strength.

The family would like to send a special thank you to the Ontario Health at Home PSW's and Palliative Care Team, and the Niagara EMS Palliative Care Medics for their amazing care and compassion.

In keeping with Frank’s wishes, cremation has taken place. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Alzheimer Society of Canada, Optimist Club of Welland, Momiji Health Care Society Toronto, or the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre of Toronto would be appreciated by the family.

Rest in peace, Dad. Your love, your lessons, and your spirit will stay with us always.

David and I are so sorry to hear of your loss. Frank was my cousin and I have so many memories from when we lived close to the family in Toronto. He would drive Jeannie and me all over and even introduced us to the Japanese groups and took us to all the outings. He would always have a quiet grin on his face and I knew he was watching out for us – family…… We only saw each other on special occasions, after that, but he would always get that grin on his face. What a special person ! Margaret – our thoughts are with you and I know you will be getting a lot of support from your wonderful big family. Please accept our deepest sympathy.

It was my pleasure to have Mr. Seko as mu Auto Shop teacher at Port High in 1969.
His patience and understanding left a mark on all of us, and he was indeed the favorite of many of us.. What he made of his life and the legacy he leaves behind are lessons to us all. To Mr Seko’s family, he made a difference and was truly one of the “Good Guys”
Rest in Peace, Sir.

Mr. Seko’s auto shop in the 70’s was the highlight of the school day. His unassuming attention to his students and their activities provided memories that are called upon often with a smile. Always there to lend his advice and a helping hand with our motorized passions… Cars, motorcycles, snowmobiles… He did not descrimnate. If it burned fuel, he was always there to help. Thank you for igniting our passions for all things combustion! Peaceful journey sensei.

I did not know Mr. Seko but I am a native of Port Colborne and know many people who would have known him. After reading his obituary, I just wanted to pass on my sincere condolences and prayers to his family but also to say how very proud you must have been of him. His endurance during the war and accomplishments in life are more than most people in life experience. A very inspirational role model for all.
