Obituary of Elma Marion Couture

Elma Marion Couture, born September 19, 1938, in Port Robinson, Ontario, passed away peacefully on October 28, 2024, at the Welland General Hospital, surrounded by her loving daughter and granddaughter. Elma was predeceased by her devoted husband, Wellie Couture, her son, Tom Kelly, her sister, Mary Neill, and her brother, Roger Beckett. She leaves behind a legacy of love, strength, and resilience through her children: Mary Phillips (Les), Marion Kelly, and Roger Kelly (Connie), as well as her cherished grandchildren: Christinia Phillips, Clayton Gibson, Madison Kelly, and Meagan Kelly. A true community pillar, Elma moved to Welland at the age of 20, where she dedicated herself to her family as a single mother in her late thirties.

She worked multiple jobs to support her loved ones, finding joy in her role as a Red Cross Homemaker, as well as serving as an answering service operator. Elma was a master swimmer and a proud instructor and coach for competitive swimming in Welland, inspiring many with her dedication to the sport. Elma was an original member of the Welland Sports Wall of Fame Committee and was honored to be featured on the wall for both swimming and baseball. She also founded the Four Bridges Open Water Swim, which was later renamed The Elma Couture Open Water Swim in her honour. With a big personality, Elma was a devoted mother and grandmother who loved attention. A breast cancer survivor, she was known for her spunky spirit and unwavering determination. The family extends their heartfelt thanks to the nurses on the 6th floor of the Welland Hospital for their exceptional care during her final days.

In keeping with Elma's wishes, cremation has taken place and arrangements are entrusted to Essentials Cremation and Burial Services. A private graveside service will be held at a later date. Elma will be remembered for her unwavering spirit and the joy she brought to those around her.

So sorry for your loss. Elma was a wonderful lady and it was a joy to work with her on the swims over the years. I always think of her when I am out on the recreational waterway, as she was the one who showed us it’s true potential.
She will be missed, but not forgotten!
