Obituary of Dorothy "Dot" May Wishart

Dorothy “Dot” Wishart, loving mother and devoted wife, passed away peacefully at Niagara Long Term Care Residence in Niagara-On-The-Lake on October 29th , 2024 at the age of 92. Predeceased by her parents Stanley and Esther White, brothers Edwin John (Jack) and Stanley (Bud) White, husband Robert Knight Wishart and daughter Christine Elizabeth Wishart, she is survived by her son George Stanley Wishart.

Dorothy was born in Toronto on the first day of 1932. At the age of 10 years the family moved to Port Arthur, and it was there she attended high school and eventually met Robert and was married. Dorothy and Robert moved to Terrace Bay for several years before settling permanently on the outskirts of Welland in the Southern Ontario region of Niagara to raise a family….in addition to raising horses, dogs, cats, and gardens.

Dorothy was a loving mother, raising her 2 children with an appreciation of the beauty of nature and the importance of living a life of gratitude and goodwill. The following years saw her enjoying work as a receptionist at City Hall in Welland.

Dorothy’s life was a life lived in gratitude. She viewed the journey as a wonderful gift and was forever appreciative for the experiences, people and things which that journey brought into her life.
She was an avid reader and an extremely proud Canadian. She adored Canada, and would spend hours reading about its history and especially its spectacular physical beauty. She travelled from coast to coast over the years, and her later journeys took her to countries overseas. Besides reading, her passions included painting and the outdoors. Dorothy and Robert would spend hours painting together in a small studio behind their home, as well as attending art classes through the years.

She was also an avid golfer and tennis player, absolutely loving both sports, and was a member of several golf and tennis clubs in the area where she and Robert would share many hours together and with friends.

My mom will lovingly be remembered for her gratitude for life, her kindness and compassion towards both people and animals and also for her strength of character. In her 92nd year, I was sitting in a park with my mom and asked her, “Mom, if a young person approached you and asked what is the most important thing in life, what would you say?”. Without a second delay, she responded “Love” The only thing my mom loved more than life, was her family. How blessed we were to have her as a guide in this life. Lots of love mom. You were a gift to all of us.

Funeral arrangements are private. As expressions of sympathy, and in lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Guide Dogs for the Blind would be greatly appreciated.

I realize that this is somewhat late but I just came across this sad news. I remember your mother as a beautiful light of positivity. I was very sorry to hear of her passing.

Dear George. I’m so very sorry to hear about your mom’s passing. I adored your parents. I met them when Chris and I were in college. Chris and I remained friends up until her passing, which just broke my heart. I searched for your mom and found her at Seasons. We chatted and tried to make plans to have lunch, and then covid hit. My mom went to Seasons and I thought it would be a perfect time to catch up with Dot, but she had already moved and I couldn’t find her again. Your mom’s passing hurts my heart, but I know she was lonely without your dad and Chris, and you living so far away. My deepest condolences George. We lost my mom on October 5th.
