Obituary of Derek Albert Helyar

Passed away peacefully on January 5, 2025 at the remarkable age of 91. Derek was predeceased by his beloved wife of 55 years, Gloria (née Davies), and his caring partner of 15 years, Ann Benning, who passed away just eight days prior. Derek was the devoted and supportive father to his sons, Darrell Helyar and Darren (Susan) Helyar. Proud and cherished Poppa to Kyle and Evan (Ashley). He will also be remembered with love by his sister-in-law Sheila, the extended Helyar family in England and by Ann’s children, Debbie Cristiano (Emilio) and Glen Benning (Angela Hachey). Predeceased by his brother David.

Born in London, England, Derek grew up during the war and was evacuated to Wales with his brothers and cousins. At just 16 years old, he enlisted in the Merchant Navy, embarking on years of service that sparked a lifelong love of travel. Derek and Gloria eventually immigrated to Canada, making great sacrifices to provide a better life for their family. When their sons were young, their home was a haven for all their sons' friends. With an open-door policy, they created a welcoming space where everyone felt at home.

A true entrepreneur, Derek dedicated most of his career to the Food Service industry. He was known for his hard work ethic, adventurous spirit, and fearless approach to life, qualities he passed on to his sons and grandsons. He always led by example, and was never afraid to dream or start a new business. Derek was known for his British wit and sense of humour, always ready with a joke or a teasing remark. He had a passion for music, learning to play the organ by ear and often entertaining his family playing a tune or singing a song. He also loved to travel. He and Gloria were sun worshippers, enjoying numerous trips to Florida, Hawaii, The Virgin Islands and Barbados. Many memories were also made on trips back to England to visit family. A skilled handyman, Derek was always generous with his time and skills, helping others whenever he could.

Later in life, Derek found joy and companionship with Ann. Together, they embraced life’s simple pleasures. They enjoyed dancing at the Legion, taking spontaneous road trips, enjoying lunch in Chippawa, travelling to Florida, cruising, and simply enjoying each other's company.

Above all, Derek will be remembered as a beloved partner, father and grandfather. He will be truly missed by all those who were fortunate to have known him.

In keeping with his wishes, cremation has taken place. A Celebration of life will be held Saturday, January 11, 2025 from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. at Essentials Cremation and Burial Services in Niagara Falls (102A-4300 Drummond Rd.), where Derek and Ann’s lives will be celebrated together.
