Obituary of David John Lee

Lee, David John.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dave Lee on Sunday, April 19, 2020, after a hard-fought battle with cancer. Dave is survived by his wife, Kathleen; children, Debbie (Luc), Norm (Melissa), Adrian (Kristine) and Derek (Erin); siblings, Isobel (John), June and Ivan; as well as his seven grandchildren, and many nephews and nieces in Canada and Northern Ireland. Predeceased by his siblings Fred, Margaret, Patsy, Elizabeth and his parents Fred and Agnes Lee.

Dave was born on February 18, 1942 in Dergenagh, County Tyrone, Northern Ireland to Fred and Agnes. He grew up on the farm, and trained as an Automotive Mechanic. Dave immigrated to Canada, and married Kathleen from Lisburn, Northern Ireland, after they met in Toronto in 1965. Early in his career, Dave and his brother-in- law Bob ran the Emerald Isle Fina service station in Etobicoke. Eventually Dave and his wife Kathleen moved to Sherkston, where they bought a service station, garage, and store which became Sherkston Auto. He loved watching his son’s racing at Humberstone Speedway, and playing hockey. His children remember him as a kind, proud, and witty Irishman who supported, loved, and encouraged them at all times.

Dave was an accomplished businessman and skilled mechanic. He loved the countryside, fishing, having an Irish coffee with friends, and watching his grandchildren grow and play. He was a family man who enjoyed travelling to Florida and back home to Ireland to spend time with cherished family and friends. He was a generous person who sponsored local baseball, soccer, racing teams and charities, loved the Toronto Maple Leafs, and was devoted to family and hard work.

The family would like to thank Dr. Phillips, Dr. Daniels, the Palliative EMS Paramedic team, and all the Personal Support Workers for their efforts, kindness, and dedication.

Essentials Cremation and Burial Services (905-354-2133) has been entrusted with arrangements. As per Dave’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A private burial will be held at Overholt Cemetery in Port Colborne and a celebration of life will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The St. Catharines General Hospital Foundation. Online condolences may be shared on Dave’s tribute page at EssentialsNiagara.com.

Dave, we love you and miss you.

Kathy and Family, my thoughts and prayers are with you at this time. Dave was our mechanic for many years, a man of integrity in his service for us. We were so sorry when his health started to fail, and eventually closed Sherkston Auto. I still think of all of you when I drive past your old business. May God bless you with fond memories of your Husband and Dad. With heartfelt sympathy from Carol and Family.

Kathy and family, please know we are thinking of you at this time. Dave took Blair under his wing and started him on his apprenticeship at Sherkston Auto. He learned a lot from him, he will never be forgotten. Rest in Peace Dave.

Dave was always very helpful growing up in Sherkston. I remember going to his shop to get candy and ice cream as a kid. After getting a car he was always there to help with gas and fixing my car when I needed help. Rip Dave, truly a Sherkston icon.

Our deepest condolences to Dave’s family at this tragic time. We met Dave in 2003 and he serviced our cars while we were at Sherkston Shores and we bought our cart from him. He was always a friendly man with a smile and a joke. He leaves a strong memory with us. RIP.
