Obituary of Christopher David Bangham

It is with heartbreaking sadness and abiding love that Chris’s family announce his death on September 28, 2023. He lived his life as he chose to leave it – his way – and surrounded by his loving family. Chris was born in Cranbrook, Kent, England, to Josephine and Bill Bangham, on March 30, 1942.

Survived by wife Ann (née Laban), the love of his life for 60 years, and children Justin (Tracy) and Nicola (Kim), his beautiful grandkids, JoJo and Chase, his brother Will (June) and his sister-in-law Janice, who reside in England, and an extremely lengthy roster of friends, colleagues and numerous co-volunteers. He will be missed enormously.

Chris was educated in England, South Africa and New Zealand, graduating from St. Lawrence School in Ramsgate, Kent, and Nottingham University with a degree in metallurgy and later an MBA from McMaster, which led to a career in the steel industry in Australia and Canada, eventually retiring from Stelpipe in Welland. In his retirement he turned his talents to work with London Life and then the Niagara Community Foundation.

Chris was a dedicated community servant, volunteer and leader with decades of service with the St. Catharines Rotary Club, having received five Paul Harris Fellow recognitions. He was on the board of the St. Catharines General Hospital, Chair of the United Way and Chair of Hospice Niagara.

One of his proudest contributions to service was the UMFUNDISI Project that he and his life and service partner, Ann, established in the district of Cape Town, South Africa, with the sponsorship of the St. Catharines Rotary Club and Rotary International, to educate and accredit principals and teachers of informal nursery schools.

When asked by his daughter, Nicola, at age 14, "What is the meaning of life?", he answered with no hesitation, “loving relationships.” And that was how he lived his life.

In accordance with Chris’s wishes, cremation has taken place. His life will be celebrated at a later date. Arrangements have been entrusted with Essentials Cremation and Burial Services (905-734-1031). Memorial donations to the Rotary International Foundation through the St. Catharines Rotary Club or the Niagara Community Foundation would be a fitting way to honour Chris’s life. Online condolences may be shared on Chris’s tribute page found at EssentialsNiagara.com.

We have always admired his incredibly gentle and gracious manner, so full of optimism and good cheer. Nothing better than sharing a glass (or two, it seemed never more than that!) of beer and great conversation about the world, places to go, politics and above all family and friends. I don’t think there’s a better model of a man who earned and supported so many friendships. We loved our friendship with Chris and Ann and will treasure its comfort and laughter, which is how we will remember Chris and continue to love Ann.

Ann and family, I want to send my heartfelt condolences on the passing of Chris. Chris’s smile and energy was infectious and he always took the time to engage in meaningful conversations. He was an enthusiastic supporter of Niagara College and provided much sage advice and encouragement to me. Chris will be missed but when I think of service above self, he comes to mind as a true role model. Take care,

I met Chris in 1985 when I was transferred to Stelpipe. Always a gentleman, he was the most enthusiastic person I have ever met. He did everything with gusto and determination. He lived the life he wanted to live, with the woman he loved and the children he cherished. Well done, my friend, well done.

There are few people that I respected and loved as much as Chris. What an absolute pleasure it was to have him in my corner, always cheering me on with his warm smile, twinkle in his eye and a kiss hello whenever we met. Ann, and family, thank you for sharing him with us. He will be missed beyond measure.

My deepest condolences to the Bangham family. It breaks my heart to read this today. He was so full of vitality and wonder and it was an honour to have met him, despite the circumstances of our first meeting (on the bike path). May his legacy and love live on within all of you.

Justin (Bonefish), Mrs. Bangham and Nicola, words cannot express my sincere condolences and sympathy for the passing of Mr. Bangham.

His Gentlemanly reception the first time I met him; the sparkle in his eye and smile, and sense of humor – resonates with Justin and Nicola.

Mr. Bangham, you’re one of the good guys – not many of us left…your legacy will live on, and I am so very proud for the opportunity of your acquaintance.

Cheers! You’ll always be remembered.
