Obituary of Billie (Flora) Maxfield (née Downing)
Billie (Flora) Maxfield (née Downing)June 24, 1932 - May 3, 2024
In the early morning hours of Friday, May 3, 2024, Billie passed away peacefully, reuniting with her husband of 65 years Charles "Max" and parents George and Marguerite Downing. She was 91 years old. She leaves her children, Mark, Chris (Mona) and Suzy (Herb Beckman), grandchildren Lauren (Will) McNaughton and Olivia Maxfield, of Winnipeg, David Maxfield of Niagara Falls, and her great granddaughter Kiera, who will carry on Billie's legacy. Dear aunt to David (Kirsten) of Cleveland, Ohio, and Steven (Betty) of Canton, Ohio. She will also be terribly missed by her cousins Bill, Nancy and Sandra Greenwood, dear friends and neighbours.
Billie was very active in sports, playing and coaching basketball and softball. She was a school secretary at Riverview School in Chippawa and James Morden School in Niagara Falls. She previously volunteered with Heart Niagara, GNGH Palliative Care and Niagara Dog Rescue. Billie created beautiful stained glass pieces, which many of her friends and family will cherish. Some of Billie’s special memories include over 30 years of winter trips to Florida with Max, where they made many lasting friendships in Daytona Beach. She also treasured her getaways with her friends from Pennsylvania, returning with hilarious tales of her adventures. Billie was heart broken when she lost Max. She never really got over it. So, although we will miss her every day, we feel a great peace knowing they are together again.
The family would like to send a sincere thank you to Miree, Gino, Lisa, Tom, Luc, Candy, David, Jamelie, Grant, Rebecca and Rose for being there for Billie in her time of need. Whether it was preparing meals and bringing them over, doing maintenance around the house, massages, providing companionship, manicures and just bringing a smile to her face. Your time and efforts have not gone unnoticed and we appreciate everything. In keeping with Billie's wishes, cremation has taken place and a celebration of her life will be held at the The Royal Canadian Legion (Branch 396 Chippawa), 3860 Legion Street, Niagara Falls, on Saturday, June 22 from 12:00 p.m until 4:00 p.m. Arrangements have been entrusted to Essentials Cremation and Burial Services in Niagara Falls. If desired, donations in Billie's memory may be made to the Niagara Dog Rescue, an organization that was near and dear to her heart.

Sending out my deepest condolences to Mark, Chris, Suzy and families. Your Mom holds a special place in my heart. While working at Riverview she took my twin daughters under her wing and kept a close eye on them and assisted in helping me with their treatments during school hours. That is something that would never happen in this day and age. I was always so grateful to her. She was a beautiful, kind, empathetic and loving person, Cherish the memories and know that her loss has left a huge impact on so many. Sincerely Heather McIntosh
Dear Mark, Chris, Sue and families,
So sorry to hear about your Mom’s passing. Both your Mom and Dad were wonderful people. So many memories of Chippawa and the Maxfields. Hope to see you all on the 22nd.
My thoughts go out to all of you at this time.
I had the privilege of working with Billie at James Morden. She was more than just the secretary there. She was an integral part of the school community, generously sharing her skills wherever they were needed. We would get together periodically over the many years since that time., the last time being in 2022. Billie was a gem and she will be missed!
